Sizing a Mat to the Door Swing

The measurement that matters is not the porch, it is the gap under the door. A mat thicker than that gap will catch every time the door opens, and a felt mat compresses just enough to make this hard to judge from the specification alone. Measure the clearance under the door before choosing a thickness, because a mat that jams the door will be moved aside within a week. Width should reach at least the width of the doorway, since a narrower mat looks accidental and lets people step past it entirely.

Covered Porch or Open Ground Changes Everything

Felt is absorbent, which is exactly what makes it good at taking dirt off a shoe and exactly what makes it slow to dry. Under a covered porch that absorbency is the point. On open ground it becomes a problem, because a mat that never dries holds moisture against whatever is underneath it. A printed felt mat belongs somewhere sheltered, and direct sun will fade the design over a season even where rain never reaches it. The rubber backing grips a hard surface well and a loose one badly, so decking and gravel need a different approach from tile or concrete.

Cleaning Felt Without Ruining the Print

Most door mats are ruined by cleaning rather than by use. Pressure washing drives water through the felt and lifts it from the backing. Machine washing does the same more slowly. Shake the mat out, brush it dry, and spot clean with a cloth rather than soaking it, and the print will outlast the backing. Lifting the mat occasionally matters for a separate reason: whatever is trapped underneath, damp leaves or grit, does more damage to the surface below than the mat prevents.
