Product Type: Door Mats

A camel on an eighteen by twenty-seven inch mat, worked in warm sand and ochre tones. The color is dyed through the felt rather than laid on top of it.

Why The Warm Tones Work

  • Desert palette hides dust. Sand and ochre are the exact colors that dry dirt arrives in, so the mat looks clean between washes rather than showing every footstep.
  • Dye reaches the fiber. Traffic wears felt evenly instead of scraping an image off a printed surface layer.
  • Stamped rubber underneath. The base grips the floor rather than sliding away from the door.

Fitting An Everyday Doorway

Eighteen by twenty-seven covers a single door with a margin either side. A front step, a side entrance or an interior hall all suit it.

Depth is around a quarter of an inch, which clears a normal door swing. A threshold strip or a low sweep is worth measuring.

Cleaning Takes Two Minutes

Water pressure does the work. A thumb over the hose end concentrates the stream far better than turning the tap higher.

  • Do hose it, or use a power washer
  • Do sweep it with a broom for dry dirt
  • Do vacuum on the floor setting
  • Do spot clean with a mild cleaner
  • Skip anything that foams heavily, since the residue holds new dirt
  • Skip the stiff brush, which lifts the nap
  • Skip the carpet setting on the vacuum, built to pull pile up
  • Skip bleach entirely

Sun And Weather

Warm pigments hold up well outdoors, but no dyed felt beats constant direct sun. Under a porch roof this mat keeps its depth for years.

Worth knowing: hose it from the underside as well as the top. Grit works down into the felt and pushing it back out is easier than pulling it up.

Questions About The Camel Mat

Is this suitable for a covered patio?
Yes, and a covered patio is close to ideal. Shelter from direct sun and standing rain is what keeps dyed felt at full color, and a patio gives you both while still counting as outdoors.

Does the mat have a strong rubber smell when new?
There can be a faint rubber note from the backing for the first day or two. Airing it outdoors before you put it down clears it.

Can it sit on top of a rug?
It can, but the stamped rubber grips a hard floor far better than it grips pile. On a rug it may creep, so a hard surface is the better choice.

How does it handle sand tracked in from a beach?
Well. Sand is dry grit, and a broom lifts it straight off the felt. Rinse the mat afterward if any has worked down into the pile.
