Porcelain plates and bowls sold as open stock rather than as boxed services, including wide rim soup plates and vegetable serving bowls. Buying by the piece is what lets a service grow to the number of people who actually sit down, instead of arriving as eight of everything at once. The glaze is fused glass and it chips at the rim before anywhere else, which is why a bare rim design survives daily use longer than a decorated one.
