Doormat Sizes That Fit the Door and the Landing
Aysire EditorialTwo numbers on a label, one tape measure, and a surprising number of ways to get it wrong. Here is how to pick a mat that looks like it belongs to your door.
A doormat is the first thing every guest steps on and the last thing anyone thinks to measure. Then the new mat arrives, lands in front of the door, and looks like a postage stamp on a billboard. Or the door rides up over it every single time it opens.
The short answer: for most single front doors, choose a mat close to the width of the door, which usually means 24 by 36 inches, the classic 2x3. Keep 18 by 27 for narrow doors, storm doors and tight landings. The longer answer takes a tape measure and about two minutes, and it starts with reading the size the right way around.
Read the numbers the right way around
Mat sizes come as two numbers, and they get swapped more often than you would think. On a 24x36 mat, 24 inches is the depth, the distance from the threshold out toward the path. The 36 inches is the width that runs along the door. Makers often spell it out as 24H x 36W, which helps, but plenty of listings just print the pair.
The larger number on a doormat runs along the door, so a 24x36 mat is three feet wide, not three feet deep. Get that backward in your head and you will picture a mat marching halfway down the steps, when in fact it sits neatly across the doorway.
What are the standard sizes of door mats?
There is no official standard, but the same handful of sizes shows up again and again. The table below is a starting point based on common door widths, not a guarantee for any particular entry. Your own measurements have the final say.
| Size (inches) | In feet | Where it tends to fit |
|---|---|---|
| 18 x 27 | 1.5 x 2.25 | Narrow single doors, storm doors, side and back doors, apartment landings |
| 18 x 30 | 1.5 x 2.5 | Single doors where a little more width fits |
| 24 x 36 | 2 x 3 | Standard 36-inch front doors and roomier porches |
| 36 x 60 | 3 x 5 | Doors with sidelights, wide porches, busy entries |
| 48 x 72 | 4 x 6 | Double doors with plenty of landing in front |
The jump between the two most popular sizes is bigger than it looks on paper. An 18x27 mat gives you 486 square inches of surface (18 times 27). A 24x36 gives you 864 (24 times 36), about 78 percent more room for feet. Same doorway, very different welcome.
Then there is the picture. A design dyed right into a felt face wears down gently instead of peeling, and the printed door mat page explains why.
Is 2x3 a doormat size?
Yes, 2x3 is a doormat size: it is the 24 by 36 inch mat, and it lines up with a standard front door. Two feet deep, three feet wide.
It is also the size that looks intentional. A mat that matches the door reads like part of the architecture. A mat that is noticeably narrower reads like something you meant to replace.
Sizing for a 36-inch front door
Thirty-six inches is a very common width for a front door in the US, and there is a practical reason doors are that generous. The ADA Accessibility Standards call for at least 32 inches of clear width at an accessible doorway, measured with the door open, and the door itself has to be wider than that clear opening.
Put a 24x36 mat in front of a 36-inch door and the long edge matches the door almost exactly. That is the look you are after on most front steps, and the 24x36 door mats are the natural place to start. An 18x27 on the same door leaves about 4.5 inches of bare floor on each side, which is 36 minus 27, split between two sides. On a narrow stoop that margin looks tidy. On a wide porch it looks a little shy.
Should the mat be as wide as the door?
Close to it, yes. A handy rule of thumb from decorators is to cover at least 80 percent of the door's width. On a 36-inch door that works out to about 29 inches, so an 18x27 lands just under the line and a 24x36 clears it with room to spare. Treat that as a guide, not a law.
Going wider than the door is fine when there is open porch on both sides and nothing to catch a toe on. It stops being fine when the mat spills off a step, crowds a railing or bumps into a planter. A doormat should look like it was measured, not dropped.
Double doors, sidelights, sliders and storm doors
Double and French doors
A pair of doors usually spans somewhere around 60 to 72 inches. Here is a neat trick: two 24x36 mats laid side by side cover 72 inches, which is the full width of a lot of double doors. Use a matching pair for a clean look, or two different designs that clearly belong together for a bit of personality. Butt the edges flat so there is no lip where they meet.
Doors with sidelights
Center the mat on the door that actually opens, not on the whole glass surround. If the landing is deep and wide, a larger mat can stretch toward the sidelights, but the door is still the anchor.
Sliding patio doors
Place the mat in front of the panel people walk through. The fixed panel does not need one, and a mat that straddles both just gets stepped on at one end.
Storm and screen doors
The outer door is usually the one with the least room underneath, so it sets the limit. This is where the 18x27 door mats earn their keep, sitting neatly inside the frame of both doors.
Measure the landing, not just the door
Width gets all the attention, but depth is where mats go wrong. A 24-inch-deep mat on a 30-inch landing leaves 6 inches before the edge of the step. That can work. The same mat on a 20-inch step hangs over the edge. A mat that hangs over the edge of a step is a trip waiting to happen, so the landing sets the depth.
Here is the two-minute measure that settles it:
- Measure the width of the door itself, not the trim around it.
- Measure the depth of the landing, from the threshold out to where the step or the walkway begins.
- Check which way the door swings. If it opens outward, the mat never has to fit under it.
- If it swings inward, close it and slide a ruler under the latch side to see how much room there is.
Apartment dwellers get one extra step: check where your landing ends and the shared hallway begins. Plenty of buildings want corridors kept clear, so the mat that fits your door may still need to stay within your own threshold.
One mat or two?
If the outside spot only takes a small mat, there is an easy fix. Lay another mat on the inside of the door instead of forcing a bigger one outside. The outdoor mat does the heavy scraping and the indoor one catches what slipped past, and the pair easily beats one oversized mat trying to do both jobs.
A new mat is also one of the quickest ways to make an entry feel fresh for the season. If the front door is part of a bigger reset, the guide to refreshing your living space for the season picks up where the doorstep leaves off.
Pick the size first, then fall for the picture
Once the tape measure has spoken, the fun part is all yours. Browse the door mats collection by size first, then by the design that makes you smile when you get home.
Keeping it looking good is easy. Most felt mats on a rubber base need little more than a rinse with the hose, a pass with the vacuum and a low-suds cleaner, and the care label says whether a power washer is welcome. Measure once, choose the size that fits, and let the mat say hello before you do.
