Lilac here is marbled rather than flat, with cream running through the violet where the dye took differently along the rope. Leash and collar match, both 100 percent hand woven cotton, both closed in solid brass.
A Marbled Lilac, Not A Flat Dye
A machine dyed rope comes out one tone from end to end. This one is dyed by hand, so the lilac deepens and lifts along its length and the cream core shows through in places. Every rope is its own pattern, and the one you receive will not match the photograph inch for inch.
The Rope Under The Color
Under the dye it is 100 percent cotton, woven by hand, which is why it sits soft in the palm from the first walk instead of holding a stiff coil. The working end is spliced and whipped, the strands turned back into the rope and bound with thread, rather than sealed in a glued sleeve.
Hardware You Do Not Replace
The trigger snap and the accessory ring are solid brass. There is no plating to wear off the pivot, which is where plated snaps always fail, so the hardware outlasts the rope. The O ring at the handle takes waste bags, keys or a small light.
Choosing A Lilac Collar Size
The maker's own warning is worth repeating: these collars run small. Measure the neck with a soft tape, allow two fingers of room, and choose from the measured figure rather than from the size your dog usually wears.
| Size | Neck fits |
|---|---|
| Small | 12 to 16 inches |
| Medium | 16 to 20 inches |
| Large | 20 to 26 inches |
One leash length, finished at 5 to 6 feet.
Honest Limits On Cotton Rope
Pale lilac shows dirt, and cotton takes hours to dry once it is soaked, so a dog that swims most days will keep handing you a wet rope. A dog that chews its own leash on the move will also wear cotton through sooner than coated nylon.
Washing Without Losing The Marbling
Hand wash in mild soap and cool water and line dry. A machine cycle blurs the marbling into one flat tone, which is the whole reason to buy this color rather than a plain one. Brass cleans with mild soap and water or a lemon juice and baking soda paste.
Lilac Set Questions
Which of the two brass fittings clips to the dog? The trigger snap at the working end. The fixed ring stays by the handle and is there to hang things from.
Is the collar adjustable? It is sized rather than adjustable, so the measured neck figure decides which of the three you need.
Does the brass need polishing? Only if you want the shine. Left alone it patinas, which does not affect how it works.
