Hand dyeing puts color into a rope that is already twisted, so the dye reaches the outside of the twist before it reaches the inside. That is what produces the depth you can see in these, and it is also why no two are the same.

Why They Vary
A machine-dyed rope is dyed as loose fiber and then twisted, which gives an even, flat color. Dyeing the finished rope means the color follows the spiral, sitting stronger on the raised parts and softer in the grooves, and it means the dyer's hand decides where one shade ends and the next begins.
The result is that two leashes in the same colorway are recognizably the same design and visibly different objects. This is the point rather than a tolerance problem, and it is worth knowing before comparing what arrives against the photograph.
How The Color Behaves Over Time
- It fades in sun, unevenly. The side that faces up on a hook or in a car will lighten first. Rotating how you hang it slows this down more than anything else.
- It softens rather than patching. Because the color is in the fiber rather than coated on, wear makes it paler rather than exposing white underneath.
- Wash it cold and alone the first time. Small-batch dyeing leaves some loose color in the fiber. One cold wash takes it out; a hot one takes more than you wanted.
What To Expect On Arrival
Slight color transfer onto a light hand in wet weather is normal in the first weeks and stops. Any strong or continuing transfer is not, and is worth raising rather than living with.
The rope itself is the same cotton rope whichever colorway you choose, so the dyeing changes appearance and nothing about how it handles. If you are choosing between two and cannot decide, choose the darker one, because it will show mud less and fade more gracefully.
Choosing A Colorway For A Reason
Beyond preference there is one practical consideration. A pale or bright leash is visible at dusk to you and to drivers and cyclists, and a dark one is not. If most of your walking happens in the hour after sunset, that is a better basis for choosing than which photograph looked best.
Multi-tone colorways read as lighter overall than a single dark shade, which is worth knowing if you want both the visibility and the depth. A reflective stitch line does the job better than any color, but very few rope leashes have one, so color is the variable you actually get to choose.
Matching A Collar To It
Where a set is offered in the same colorway, buying both at once is the only reliable way to get a true match. Two hand dyed pieces bought months apart come from different batches and will not agree, which is inherent to the process rather than a stocking failure.
