Sizing a Rug to the Room, Not to the Furniture

The most common rug mistake is buying one that floats in the middle of a room like an island. A rug reads as part of the floor when the front legs of the seating sit on it, and as an afterthought when nothing does. In a living room, measure the seating arrangement first and buy the rug to reach under it, rather than measuring the empty floor. Door mats work on a different rule: the useful measurement is the door width, because a mat narrower than the doorway looks accidental and one wider than the frame catches the door.

What Machine Washable Actually Changes

Washable is a construction decision, not a finish sprayed on afterwards. A cotton kilim is washable because it is flat woven and thin enough to survive a drum; a thick pile rug is not, whatever the label says about stain resistance. Stain resistant and washable are different properties, and a product can carry one without the other. For cushions and pillows, the question is whether the cover unzips, because a washable cover on a non washable insert is still the practical answer for a sofa that gets used.

Reading a Furniture Specification Before It Arrives

Three numbers decide whether a piece works in your room, and only one of them is usually in the photograph. Overall dimensions tell you if it fits the wall. Depth is the number that decides whether a walkway still works, and it is the one people forget to check. The third is weight, which tells you whether the piece can be moved alone once assembled. For anything that arrives flat, the assembly note matters as much as the finish: a steel framed unit with pre drilled panels is a different evening from one that is not.
