Seat Height Is Set by the Surface, Not by Preference

There is a working gap between a seat and the surface above it, and it is roughly 25 to 30 centimetres. Below that your knees hit; above it you eat with your shoulders raised. Since counters and bars sit at different heights, a stool that works at one is wrong at the other. Measure from the floor to the underside of the counter, then subtract about 28 centimetres, and buy to that number rather than to the words counter or bar. Width matters second: allow around 60 centimetres per stool so that elbows do not compete.

What an Ottoman Has to Do to Earn Its Space

An ottoman is the most flexible thing in a room and the easiest to buy badly. It has to work as a footrest, which sets its height against the sofa seat, and often as occasional seating, which sets its firmness. An ottoman should sit level with the sofa cushion or slightly below it, because anything higher stops being a footrest and becomes an obstacle. Storage inside is what turns it from furniture into a solution, though a hinged lid and a removable one behave differently when something is resting on top.

Upholstery and How It Handles Actual Life

Every upholstery choice is a trade between how it feels and how it cleans. Woven fabric is warm and absorbs everything. Faux leather wipes clean and can feel cold or sticky depending on the room. Acrylic and moulded seats clean instantly and need a cushion to be comfortable for long. In a kitchen the surface that wipes clean wins over the one that feels best, because a dining chair meets food every day.
