Fabric and Rigid Drawers Solve Different Problems

A fabric drawer on a steel frame is light, moves easily and lifts out to be carried to where the clothes are. It also sags under dense weight and will not hold a shape if half filled. A rigid drawer runs on a track, takes heavier loads and stays square, at the cost of being fixed where it stands. Fabric suits folded clothing and soft goods; anything with real density, like books or tools, belongs in a rigid drawer. A removable fabric drawer is worth more in a nursery than anywhere else, because being able to carry the drawer to the changing table is the whole point.

Weight Ratings Are Quoted Per Drawer

A stated capacity almost always refers to one drawer, not to the unit as a whole, and that is where overloading starts. Eight drawers rated at a few kilograms each is a modest total, and a tower loaded past it will bow at the frame long before anything tears. Load the bottom drawers heaviest and the top ones lightest, because a top heavy unit is unstable even when it is well within its total rating. On a unit that arrives flat, the assembly instruction about which panel faces the wall is structural rather than cosmetic, since that panel is usually what stops the frame racking.

Anchoring Anything Tall

Tall storage tips forward when a drawer is open and weight moves outside the base, and a child climbing an open drawer is the classic case. Anchor any unit taller than it is wide to the wall, and do it in a room used by children regardless of the height. Most units ship with a strap or a bracket for this, and it is the part most often left in the box. Carpet makes the problem worse rather than better, since a soft floor lets the frame rock.
