Most serving platters cannot be cooked in. Porto Brasil rates this stoneware for the oven as well as the microwave and the dishwasher, which means the thing you bake in and the thing you carry out can be the same object.

One Dish Instead of Two

The usual sequence is bake in metal, then move the food onto something presentable. Every transfer costs heat, breaks whatever crust formed, and adds a pan to the sink. A platter rated for oven heat removes the middle step entirely, so a baked side dish reaches the table looking like it did when it came out. The limit worth respecting is the one every fired ceramic has: heat it and cool it gradually rather than moving it between extremes.

A Long Narrow Shape

Thirteen inches by five, and only seven tenths of an inch deep, is a proportion rather than just a size. It suits food laid out in a line, which is most of what a platter is asked to do: a row of grilled vegetables, a fish, slices arranged edge to edge. A round dish of the same area forces the food into a pile in the middle, and that is a different way of presenting the same ingredients.

Where the Piece Is Made

Porto Brasil produces in Porto Ferreira in Sao Paulo state, a place the company describes as the national center of Brazilian ceramics. That matters less as provenance than as an explanation of the finish: a stoneware body fired in a region built around ceramics tends to be denser and heavier than decorative earthenware, which is why this holds heat and does not chip at a touch.

Heat, Weight and Edges

Is a grill safe for it? The maker rates it for a conventional oven rather than direct radiant heat. A grill element concentrates heat on one face, which is a harsher test than an oven and worth avoiding on any ceramic.

Will two platters match? Closely rather than exactly. A reactive glaze finishes differently on every piece, which the maker states outright, so a pair set side by side will differ slightly in depth of color.

How heavy is a stoneware platter? Heavier than porcelain at the same size, which is the trade for the heat it holds. Carry it with two hands when full rather than balancing it on one.
