This is a cake stand that happens to have a dome, not a dome that happens to fit a cake. The base turns, which means the cut face of a cake comes round to you instead of the cake being picked up and moved, and a cake that is never handled keeps its edges.
- Turn instead of lift Every side comes into view without the dome coming off or the cake being touched.
- Twelve inches across Takes a full round cake with room at the edge for a server to get underneath.
- Crystal, not plain glass The cover is lead-free ultra-clear crystal, so what is underneath reads true.
Why the Base Turns
Decorating a cake means working the same edge from every angle, and the usual way to do that is to pick the cake up and rotate it, which is how a finished side gets a thumbprint in it. A turning base removes the handling entirely. The same thing matters after the cake is cut: a covered cake dries fastest at the exposed face, and lifting the dome to look at it is what dries it. Turning to see costs nothing.
What the Dome Actually Does
The cover slows drying rather than sealing against it. There is no gasket and none is intended; the dome rests on the base unaided and that is enough to keep dust and anything airborne off a cut surface for a day or two. Overnight and beyond, a cake still wants wrapping. What the dome does that wrapping cannot is leave the cake visible, which is the whole reason to have made it look like that.
Twelve Inches and What Fits
A standard round layer cake runs eight or nine inches, so twelve leaves a working margin all the way round. That margin is not decoration: it is where a cake server goes in flat and comes out with a slice. Fill the full twelve inches and every slice has to be cut on the stand and then lifted at an angle, which is how a first slice loses its shape.
Cake, Cleaning and Placement
Does it seal against air? No, and it is not meant to. A dome sits on the base under its own weight, which keeps dust off but is not an airtight cover for anything that needs one.
Is it only good for cake? Yes, and that is its second life. Cheese, pastries, a dried arrangement or a group of small objects all suit it, and the turning base is as useful for a display as it is for a dessert.
What cleans the glass without streaks? A microfibre cloth and glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth rather than into the dome, working from the top down so nothing runs onto the wood.
