Shoes
Footwear across four shapes: wingtip oxfords and loafers for formal wear, canvas and high top sneakers for daily use, chelsea boots for cooler months, and slip resistant clogs and sandals built for long hours on hard floors. Each is engineered around a different problem, so the right choice usually follows the surface you walk on and the hours you spend standing, not the outfit.

Sizing When Width Matters as Much as Length
Most people know their length and have never checked their width, which is why a shoe in the correct size can still rub. Dress shoes are commonly offered in M and W fittings, and the difference is felt across the ball of the foot rather than at the toe. If a shoe feels tight across the widest part but has room at the front, the answer is a wider fitting, not a longer one. Feet also swell through the day, so a fitting judged in the morning will read differently by evening.
What the Sole and the Footbed Actually Do
These are two separate jobs and they are often confused. The sole handles grip and abrasion against the ground; the footbed handles what your foot rests on. A cushioned footbed reduces fatigue over hours of standing, while a slip resistant sole is about the surface underfoot, and neither substitutes for the other. A removable footbed is worth noticing for a second reason: it can be taken out and replaced, which extends the life of a shoe whose upper is still sound.
Matching the Shoe to the Surface You Walk On
A smooth leather sole reads as formal and behaves badly on wet stone. A rubber outsole grips but changes the line of a dress shoe. Canvas breathes and dries quickly, which suits warm weather and suits rain poorly. Slip resistant clogs exist because kitchen and hospital floors combine hard surfaces with spills, and an ordinary sole fails at both. Choosing against the surface rather than the outfit is what stops a shoe being worn twice and abandoned.
Formality travels upward from the shoe, so it helps to compare against the cut you plan to wear in Apparel, and if the search is specifically for formal footwear rather than everyday wear, start with dress shoes.
