One starfish on rocks with two small sailboats on the horizon, painted across an eighteen inch square pillow. A whole seascape in one square.

Foreground And Horizon Together

  • Two distances in one image. A starfish close enough to see its texture and boats far enough to be shapes, which is what gives the painting its depth.
  • The larger format carries it. A composition with a horizon needs width. Eighteen inches is where the distance reads rather than compressing.
  • Shape from the start. The filling is enclosed at manufacture, so the square holds its edges rather than sagging.

Anchoring A Seat

This size holds the corner of a sofa, a daybed or a wide bench, and gives proper back support rather than sitting as an accent.

On a narrow chair the scale of the image is lost along with the comfort.

Looking After It

  • Do treat marks in place with a damp cloth and a mild cleaner
  • Do work from the outside of a mark inward
  • Do air dry it
  • Do shake it by hand every few weeks to restore the loft
  • Skip the washing machine; the sham and insert are one piece
  • Skip direct heat, which sets stains and stiffens fabric
  • Skip leaving it out in heavy rain

Rain, Damp And Spills

The fabric turns away rain, morning damp and spills, then dries clean with nothing left behind.

Standing water is different. The fill takes it on slowly and gives it back even more slowly.

Worth knowing: dry it standing on one corner rather than flat. Water finds its way down and out instead of settling into the base of the fill.

Questions About This Starfish Pillow

How large are the sailboats in the design?
Small, on the horizon line. They are what establishes distance rather than being a subject in their own right.

Is the blue dark or light?
The sky band above the horizon is the deepest tone in the design, which is what makes the pale rocks and sand come forward.

Would a dock be too harsh for it?
Under cover and rinsed occasionally it holds up. Salt buildup is what eventually stiffens any outdoor textile.

Is the reverse printed too?
Several angles appear in the photographs, and those are the fastest way to settle it.

Which is the dominant element?
The starfish in the foreground. The boats are scale markers rather than the subject, and reading them that way is how the design was composed.
