Rust and brown weathering from the Clochard Grunge series, on a dress. A weathered print on a dress does something it cannot do on a smaller garment: it reads as a dyed cloth rather than as a design. Across this much surface the broken, uneven surface stops looking like a pattern applied to fabric and starts looking like fabric that has aged.
Why Weathering Needs A Large Surface
- Irregularity reads as authenticity only at scale. On a small panel a distressed texture looks like a repeat; across a whole dress the eye finds no repeat and accepts it as the cloth itself.
- The print continues through the seams. Fabric is printed flat and cut afterwards, so the weathering carries over the shoulder and round the body without a break.
- It will not degrade further. The aging is dyed in, so unlike a genuinely worn garment this one stops exactly where it started.
The Cut And The Cloth
96% polyester with 4% spandex at 6.19 oz per square yard, drop shoulder, lowered armhole with widened sleeve, oversized through the body. The oversized line suits the print, because a fitted garment would stretch the weathering across the body and pull its irregularity into stripes.
Rust And Brown Are Autumn Colours
This is the dress in the range that carries into cold weather rather than stopping at summer. It works over black or brown leggings and under a tan or olive coat, and the earthy palette sits with leather and suede rather than against them.
Where It Is The Wrong Dress
If you want something that looks crisp and new, a weathering design is the wrong starting point. The uneven surface is the intent, and it will read as worn on the first wearing because that is what it was designed to do.
Before You Order
Is the dress meant to look faded? Yes. Clochard Grunge imitates aged surfaces deliberately. It is the design working as intended rather than a printing fault or a damaged unit.
Will the colours darken or lighten with washing? Neither. The dye is bonded inside the fibre, so the weathered look stays exactly as it arrived.
What size should I take? Your usual one. The volume is cut into the pattern, so a larger size lengthens the dress as well as widening it.
Layering Changes the Size
These are body measurements, not garment measurements. Take your chest at its fullest with arms down, your waist at its narrowest and your hips at their fullest, keeping the tape level. Each dress is cut and sewn after it is ordered, so a finished one can measure up to an inch away from the chart.
This is the one worn over leggings and under a coat, which is where an oversize dress can tip into bulk. Every size is cut with about six inches more chest than the row it sits on, so the size your tape gives you is the intended fit rather than a close one and nothing needs adding for the layer. Land between M and L and the ladder jumps just over three inches where every step below it moves about one and five-eighths, so take L.
