An orange and multicolour landscape on a drop shoulder dress. The drop shoulder is the detail that makes a printed dress work, and it is easy to miss on a product page. Moving the shoulder seam down onto the upper arm changes where the fabric pivots, and a garment that pivots lower falls in longer, cleaner lines with fewer breaks across the print.
Where The Seam Sits Changes The Print
- Fewer breaks across the artwork. A standard shoulder seam cuts the design at the highest, most visible point. A dropped one moves that cut down the arm where it interrupts less.
- Longer drape lines. Fabric hanging from a lower pivot falls further before it meets the body, which is what keeps a large print flowing rather than folding.
- Movement without distortion. Raising your arm in a dropped-shoulder dress lifts the sleeve rather than the hem, so the print does not stretch out of shape as you move.
The Cloth
96% polyester with 4% spandex at 6.19 oz per square yard. The balance of that weight is what the whole cut depends on: heavy enough to hang in a line, light enough to fall rather than stand away from the body.
Orange Reads Warm All Year
Unlike a bright summer colour, a landscape built on orange carries into autumn, because the palette sits with brown, olive, tan and cream rather than needing summer around it. Black or brown leggings underneath, and nothing patterned.
What It Is Not
This is not a structured dress. There is no waist, no seaming to shape it and nothing to define the figure, which is the trade for the drape. If you want a dress that follows the body, this cut is the wrong one in the range.
Before You Order
What does drop shoulder actually mean? The shoulder seam sits below the shoulder point, on the upper arm, so the sleeve falls from a lower pivot and the fabric drapes rather than standing out.
Does the print continue around the back? Yes. The cloth is printed before the panels are cut, so the landscape runs across the whole garment.
Which size should I take? Your usual one. The relaxed line is built into the pattern, so a larger size gives extra length rather than a better fit.
Shoulders Are Not a Fit Point
These are body measurements, not garment measurements. Take your chest at its fullest with arms down, your waist at its narrowest and your hips at their fullest, keeping the tape level. Each dress is cut and sewn after it is ordered, so a finished one can measure up to an inch away from the chart.
With the seam sitting on the upper arm rather than at the shoulder, there is no shoulder measurement to get right, which leaves the chest and the hips doing the work. Read both rows and go with the larger where they part company. The gap that catches people is M to L, where the chart adds a little over three inches in a single step.
