Mystery is a mandala drawn in layers working outward from a middle point, and layered work asks something specific of a print: not sharpness and not saturation, but the ability to keep separate rings from merging into one another.

What Layered Detail Requires

  • Separation between adjacent tones. Concentric bands sit close together, and a print that cannot hold the difference between two similar shades turns a layered figure into a blur.
  • Color dyed into the fiber. Sublimation reproduces the step between one ring and the next, where a surface layer tends to bleed them together.
  • Flat seams and no sewn-in label, so nothing raised runs across a set of rings that are meant to read as concentric.
  • A 95% cotton gusset beneath the printed outer, keeping the skin-contact decision separate from the artwork.

How Depth Survives a Wash

A layered design loses its depth before it loses its brightness, because depth is a relationship between tones rather than a property of any one of them. That relationship is fixed when the dye sits inside the fabric, so it does not drift. The knit is the part that moves, and a relaxed knit spreads the rings unevenly, which reads as the figure going soft.

Where a Layered Print Sits

Under jeans and mid tones nothing shows. Concentric rings beneath thin light cloth read as a soft disc rather than as rings, which is a reason to save this one for darker clothing. Beyond that it is not a specialist purchase: a heavily layered figure reads darker at a glance and quieter up close, which makes it the design to reach for when you want a pattern to be there without announcing itself.

Before You Order

Will the rings distort? Not in ordinary use, because the elastane pulls the knit back. They lose their circle only when the panel is pulled taut, so choose the band you measure into rather than the one below it.

Which cut carries more of the figure? The slip, because a symmetrical figure needs a full rear panel to read completely. On a thong it registers at the front and the waist and works more as a wash of tone.
