How to Avoid Panty Lines Without Giving Up Comfort

Aysire Editorial
That ridge under your leggings is just an edge in the wrong place. Move it, flatten it or tuck it under a waistband, and comfort comes along for the ride.

You find the perfect pair of leggings, the ones that make you stand a little taller, and then you catch your reflection in a store window. There it is: a neat little ridge running right across the seat. Nobody ordered that.

Good news first. You do not have to trade comfort for a smooth line, and you do not have to live in a thong you secretly hate. A line comes from an edge sitting in the wrong place, and once you know where that edge is, you can hide it, flatten it or skip it altogether. Here is how, outfit by outfit.

Why do I always have panty lines?

Most of the time, blame the elastic. A covered band is the thickest thing in your outfit at that spot, and when it grips, it also presses a soft little valley into the skin beside it. Put a fitted skirt over the top and the fabric rides up over the ridge and sinks into the valley, tracing the whole outline for anyone walking behind you.

Panty lines come from the edge of your underwear, not the underwear itself, so fix where that edge sits. Our no visible panty line edit goes deep on the construction side. Here, let's get dressed.

One quick reality check before we do. Underwear a size too small makes everything worse, because even a soft, flat edge will cut in when it is stretched tight. If you have been sizing down in the hope of looking smoother, try the opposite: measure your hips and trust the chart.

Under leggings and workout clothes

Leggings are the toughest test in your closet. They are thin, stretchy and pulled close over exactly the place a leg opening sits, so anything with a band or a folded hem is going to show up for the photo.

The trick most people miss is hiding in plain sight. Pick a rise whose top edge tucks under the leggings' own waistband, so one edge hides another. A high waisted brief does this beautifully under high-rise leggings. Its waistline vanishes under the waistband, and with a flat, bonded leg opening there is very little left to see.

For an actual workout, comfort beats minimal coverage. A thong can feel lovely on the couch and much less lovely at mile three, because friction adds up with every stride and every squat. A brief spreads that movement over more fabric. If a thong is still your gym favorite, fine, just make sure it stays put when you lunge.

And yes, you can wear underwear under leggings and still look smooth. Going without solves the line, but it also leaves nothing breathable between you and a synthetic knit for an hour of sweat, which is the one job a cotton gusset is built for.

What works under jeans and pants

Denim is your friend here. Under jeans, almost any comfortable cut works, because heavy denim smooths over most edges. The trouble starts when the fabric gets lighter.

Tailored pants in a fine crepe or a smooth cotton twill sit closer to the body than they look, and they show the seat far more clearly than jeans do. This is where a thong or a bonded-edge brief earns its place. A high waisted brief is especially good under a tucked shirt, since its flat waist sits above where most pants close and leaves nothing to press a ridge across your stomach.

A small styling secret: back pockets, yokes and patterned fabric all break up the surface. A line that would shout through plain stretch cotton barely whispers through a busy print or a pair with pockets on the seat.

What to wear under a dress

Dresses are where most of us notice a line for the first time, usually in a photo someone else took. The fabric decides almost everything, so start there.

Bodycon and fitted stretch

A bodycon dress hugs everything, which makes the back leg opening the edge to lose. A thong removes it completely, which is why it became the classic answer. If you would rather keep some coverage, a brief with bonded edges and a rise that ends at your natural waist is a close second. Fitted dresses in four-way stretch sit close by design, so pair them with the smoothest thing in your drawer.

Satin, silk and slip dresses

Shiny fabric is the most honest fabric there is. Light bounces off it, and every ripple underneath turns into a little shadow. Under satin, go for the thinnest, flattest edges you own, and think about a slip. A smooth layer between you and the dress lets it glide over you instead of clinging to every detail.

White, pale and sheer

Under pale linen or a white sundress, color matters as much as cut. Under white or pale fabric, choose underwear close to your skin tone, because a bright pair reads through even with perfectly flat edges. Keep your printed pairs for denim, black and mid tones, where nothing shows through at all.

Is a thong the only answer?

It is the most reliable fix under anything tight through the seat, simply because there is no back edge left to show. Still, other fixes exist, and none of them should feel like a punishment.

If health worries have kept you away from thongs, this should help. Cleveland Clinic notes that thongs are not necessarily bad for you, pointing to a study that found they did not raise the risk of yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis or urinary tract infections. That leaves comfort as the real question, and comfort mostly comes down to fit.

A thong that digs in at the back is usually too small at the hip rather than badly designed, since the side straps carry the whole pair. The thong underwear page walks through the fit in detail. The short version: size by your hips, never by your waist.

Not a thong person? Plenty of people are not, and that is fine. A high waisted brief with bonded edges covers you properly, still disappears under most pants and skirts, and is the pair you will happily reach for on a twelve-hour day.

The comfort details nobody sees

Smooth only counts if you can wear it until bedtime. A few small details decide whether a pair is one you forget about or one you are counting the hours in.

  • No elastic band. A bandless edge cannot leave a red ring around your hips, and it cannot roll over while you sit at a desk.
  • A cotton gusset. Cotton sits where breathability matters most, which lets a sleek stretch knit do the smoothing everywhere else.
  • Four-way stretch. Fabric that gives in every direction moves with you instead of creeping, so there is no discreet tugging on the stairs.
  • The right size by the tape. Take your hip measurement at the fullest point and order by the chart. Bandless pairs stay put through fit rather than grip, so the number matters more than usual.

Get those four right and smooth stops being a compromise. It simply becomes how your underwear feels.

When a little line is fine

Something worth saying out loud: a visible line is not a crime. It mostly proves that a person is wearing clothes, and a peek of waistband above low-rise pants has had more than one fashion moment of its own.

So treat smoothing as a choice you make per outfit, not a rule you live by. Under jeans on a Saturday, wear the comfy pair with the cheeky print. Under a satin slip dress at a wedding, reach for the flattest thing you own. The best anti-line wardrobe is not one perfect pair; it is the right pair for each outfit.

Build a small drawer that covers every outfit

You do not need a drawer full of shapewear to look smooth. As a starting point, a handful of pairs covers almost everything, and you can adjust it to the clothes you actually wear:

  • A thong or two for bodycon dresses, fitted skirts and tailored pants.
  • A high waisted brief for leggings, workouts and long days on your feet.
  • A pair close to your skin tone for white and pale fabric.
  • A few prints you love for jeans, dark colors and everything in between.

If you are rethinking the whole drawer, our guide on building a lingerie wardrobe covers bras, fabrics and fit beyond the basics.

Then have some fun with it. Browse the panties collection, from playful printed thongs to high waisted briefs, pick a cut for the outfit you wear most, and enjoy a smooth line you can forget about.
