How to Wash a Hoodie So It Stays Soft and Bright
Aysire EditorialEvery closet has one. The hoodie that comes out the minute the temperature drops, the one you steal back from whoever borrowed it, the one that somehow smells like Sunday mornings. Then one laundry day it comes out of the dryer stiff, a little short in the sleeves and with a print that looks tired. Nothing dramatic happened. It just got washed like a towel.
A hoodie is easy to look after once you know what it is: a brushed fleece with a soft, fluffy inside, often wearing a print on the outside. Treat both of those kindly and it gets better with age instead of worse. Here is the whole routine, from pockets to hanger.
Can you put a hoodie in the washing machine?
Yes, almost always. Most cotton and polyester fleece is made to go in the machine, and hand washing a garment this heavy is more work than it is worth. The one thing to do first is read the little label inside the side seam.
That label tells you more than you might think. Under the Care Labeling Rule enforced by the Federal Trade Commission, a label has to name a water temperature only if regular hot water would harm the garment, and it has to warn you with words like "Do not" or "Only" when a common step would cause damage. A care label is the maker's safe limit, not their favorite setting, so "machine wash" never means "hot is best." Gentler than the label is always allowed. Rougher is a gamble.
Before it goes in: pockets, strings and zips
A minute of prep saves most of the damage people blame on the machine.
- Empty the pocket. A forgotten tissue in a kangaroo pouch turns into white confetti that clings to fleece for weeks.
- Tie the drawstring ends together in a loose knot, so a string cannot slip back into the hood channel and leave you fishing for it with a safety pin.
- Zip it all the way up. An open zipper is a row of tiny teeth spinning around with everything else in the drum.
- Wash with friends that are alike. Other fleece, sweatpants and soft knits make good company. Towels shed lint, and jeans with metal buttons are rough on a brushed surface.
Inside out or right side out?
Inside out, every time. The face of a hoodie is the side the world sees, and in the drum it takes all the rubbing from zippers, buttons and everything else in the load. Turn it in and that face, along with any chest print, comes out looking the way it went in.
How much a print needs this depends on how it was made. A design printed onto the finished garment sits on the surface and wears from friction, while an all-over print lives in the fabric itself. The printed hoodie page shows how to tell the two apart at a glance. Either way, inside out never hurts.
The settings that keep fleece soft
Choose cold or cool water and a gentle or permanent press cycle. Cool water keeps colors clear and is kinder to cotton fibers, and pale shades in particular stay brighter when they are not cooked every week. A slower spin also means fewer creases pressed into the body.
Go easy on detergent. A heavy fleece holds a lot of water, and too much soap left in the fabric dries into a stiff, slightly scratchy feel. Use the amount your detergent suggests for a small load, and give the machine room. A hoodie needs space to tumble, so a half-full drum gets it cleaner than a packed one.
Skip chlorine bleach entirely on colors and prints. For a white or heather hoodie that needs a brighter wash, an oxygen-based brightener is the gentler choice, and the label will say "Only non-chlorine bleach" if that is all the garment can take.
Do hoodies shrink in the wash?
They can, and heat is almost always the reason. Cotton fibers relax and tighten when they get hot and tumble at the same time, which is why a hoodie usually shrinks in the dryer rather than in the washer. Cotton-rich fleece is more likely to shrink than a blend with plenty of polyester in it.
Your safest options, in order:
- Hang it to dry on a sturdy hanger, or lay it flat on a rack. Turn the hood and pocket out halfway through so the thick parts catch up with the body.
- If you use the dryer, choose low heat and take it out while it is still very slightly damp, then let it finish on a hanger.
- Never use high heat to hurry it along. That is the step that takes an inch off the sleeves.
Patience pays here. A fleece hoodie can take most of a day to air dry, and that is completely normal.
How to wash a hoodie so it stays fluffy
To wash a hoodie so it stays fluffy, leave fabric softener out completely, because it flattens the brushed fibers. It coats each one and glues the nap down, and the cozy loft that keeps you warm goes with them. The fleece hoodie page explains why that brushed layer matters so much for warmth.
Want it softer anyway? Give it a shake when it comes out of the washer, and run it on an air-only or no-heat dryer setting for ten minutes with a couple of wool dryer balls to lift the nap before hanging. And if little pills appear under the arms, a fabric comb takes them off in a minute. They are a sign of a well-loved garment, not a faulty one.
How often does it really need a wash?
Less often than you think. Worn over a T-shirt, a hoodie barely touches your skin, so as a starting point, try washing it every five or six wears and adjust to how you actually use it. Air it out on a hanger between wears and it stays fresh far longer than it would balled up on a chair.
Wear it straight against your skin, sweat in it or spill on it, and it goes in sooner. Gym hoodies are the obvious exception and deserve a wash after each workout.
The payoff is real. Every wash wears a hoodie a little, so washing it only when it needs it is the simplest way to keep it soft for years.
Spot cleaning the usual suspects
Most hoodie stains are small and land in the same places. Treat them before the wash, because heat from the dryer can set a stain for good.
- Makeup or sunscreen around the hood rim. Work in a drop of liquid detergent with your fingers, wait ten minutes, then wash as normal.
- Food on the pocket. Scrape off what you can, blot with cool water and dab on detergent. Rubbing hard only pushes it deeper into the fleece.
- Deodorant marks inside the arms. A little detergent and a soft toothbrush lift the residue before it builds up.
Test anything new on an inside seam first, especially on bright colors.
The same care works for sweatshirts
A crewneck is a hoodie without the hood, so every step above applies, only with less to dry. If you are deciding between the two, the fleece sweatshirt page lays out where each one earns its place, and both repay the same cool, gentle routine.
Good care is also what keeps a small wardrobe working. Our guide on building a capsule wardrobe that works shows how a few pieces you love, looked after well, cover far more days than a closet full of quick buys.
Softer every season
Cold water, inside out, no softener, low heat or a hanger. That is the whole secret, and it turns a good hoodie into the one everyone in the house wants to borrow.
If yours has finally had its day, or you want a second one to rotate with it, browse the sweatshirts and hoodies collection, from cozy fleece pullovers to printed designs with a sense of humor. Pick the one that makes you smile, wash it kindly, and let it become your new Sunday morning favorite.
