Witch is a Halloween design, and themed artwork is the one category where the print method really shows, because a costume-adjacent design usually lives on cheap fabric and looks it after two washes. This one does not, and the reason is worth knowing.

What a Themed Print Needs

  • To survive past the theme. Seasonal goods are usually printed to last one season, which is why they crack. Sublimated dye is set into the fiber and has nothing to crack.
  • The same construction as an unthemed pair. Flat seams, no elastic bands and no sewn-in label, rather than a cheaper build because the artwork is a novelty.
  • A 95% cotton gusset, which most themed underwear does not bother with.

Why Sublimation Suits Costume Art

Themed designs tend to be high contrast, and high contrast is exactly where a surface print fails first: the boundary between a dark shape and a pale ground is the line that cracks. Pigment held within the fabric has no boundary to fail at, because there is no layer. That is the difference between a print that reads as deliberate in year three and one that looks tired by November. The knit ages instead, which is what the care routine is for.
