A polka dot has no subject at all, which makes it purely geometric. Regular spots on a plain ground behave under stretch in a way no illustration does, and that is the interesting part of this design.

Why Dots Show Every Pull

  • A circle is the shape the eye measures best. You know what a round dot looks like, so an oval one reads immediately as the fabric being stretched rather than as a design choice.
  • Recovery, not just stretch. At 17% elastane the knit recovers its shape after being pulled, which is what keeps a spot round at the end of a day.
  • Flat seams and no sewn-in label, so no raised line cuts across a regular grid of spots and breaks the rhythm.
  • A 95% cotton gusset under the printed outer, so the comfort of the pair has nothing to do with the geometry on it.

How Red Holds Its Ground

Red is the shade people expect to bleed, and on a surface print it often does, because the printed layer sits on the fabric and washes off it gradually. Dye fixed inside the weave does not migrate, so this one holds its ground rather than tinting a load of laundry. That said, running anything strongly dyed alongside pale laundry early on is sensible regardless of how it got there.

Dressing Around a Red Print

Red is about the highest-contrast thing a print can be, and it behaves accordingly: invisible under denim, black and anything with texture, and the most obvious beneath anything pale. That is contrast doing it rather than the fabric being thin, and no cut changes it. Everywhere else it is simply a spot print, which is about as timeless as a pattern gets and dates less than any illustration would. The slip is made in all four sizes and the thong in Medium and Large, so check the run before you settle on a cut.

  • Gusset: 95% cotton, 5% elastane, which is the breathable part of the garment.
  • Stretch: four-way, so the knit gives across the body as well as along it.
  • Styles: slip and thong.
  • Sizes: slip in Small, Medium, Large and X-Large; thong in Medium and Large.
  • How to measure: run the tape around the widest part of the hip.
  • Hip measurement: Small 87 to 93 cm, Medium 94 to 99, Large 100 to 106, X-Large 106 to 116.

Before You Order

Does red show through light clothing? More than a softer shade would. Beneath cream or white an undyed pair is the better call, since red on a light ground is about as much contrast as underwear can carry.

Will it run in the wash? Sublimated dye is fixed inside the weave and does not migrate. Washing with pale items for the first few cycles is still a sensible habit with anything this saturated.
