A portrait printed on charcoal jersey. Legend is the darkest tee in this range, and a dark ground does something a pale one cannot: it lets a face carry the shirt without the shirt shouting. The image reads at close range and the garment reads as a plain dark tee from further away.

What A Charcoal Ground Is Worth

  • The print is visible without being loud. On white the same portrait would dominate an outfit; on charcoal it sits inside the shirt rather than on top of it.
  • Dark polyester forgives a day of wear. Dust, creases and light marks that show instantly on a pale tee disappear here, so the shirt survives a long day looking the same as it started.
  • Detail in the shadows survives. Sublimation holds continuous tone, so the dark areas of a portrait stay separated instead of blocking up into one flat mass.

The Knit Behind The Image

95% polyester with 5% elastane, composition varying by up to 1%, in a premium mid-weight jersey. The four-way stretch recovers on the cross and lengthwise grains, so the shirt goes back to its shape rather than bagging at the shoulders after a few wears. Because the dye lives in the fibre, the printed area is exactly as soft and as breathable as the unprinted area. Blank components in the US and Mexico are sourced from the US, EU components from Lithuania.

What Charcoal Will Not Do

Dark polyester shows lint and pet hair more than cotton does, and a charcoal shirt is where that is most obvious. Keep it away from a white towel in the dryer and the problem never starts; a lint roller solves the rest in seconds.

Pairing A Dark Printed Tee

Charcoal is close enough to neutral that almost anything works below it, and that is unusual for a printed shirt. Indigo, black, olive and stone all sit comfortably. If you layer, an unbuttoned shirt in a lighter tone frames the portrait rather than hiding it.

Answers Before You Pick A Size

Is this a transfer or a print? Neither in the usual sense. The colour is sublimated into the polyester, so there is no film, no transfer edge you can feel with a fingertip, and nothing to peel at the fold.

Is the portrait on the back too? No. The image sits on the front; the back is plain charcoal jersey.

Does the cut run true to size? No. The chest table below has an unusually wide step between M and L, close to five inches where the other steps are around three, so a 40 to 42 inch chest belongs in L.

Size Guide

These are body measurements, not garment measurements. Run a tape around the fullest part of your chest with your arms down, keep it level, and match the figure below. Read this table before you order your usual size. The jump from M to L is nearly five inches, far wider than the gap between the other sizes, so a chest of 40 to 42 inches needs L rather than M.
