This knit beanie is Essential Knit in black, a smooth, close knit by Allpa with a rolled brim and a gentle slouch behind. The label breaks the yarn down as mostly baby alpaca, with polyamide and a touch of wool, and the hat comes in one unisex size. Solid black is the color that goes with everything, and on a soft knit it looks deep and velvety rather than flat.
- Two ways on. Worn slouched it looks relaxed; pulled down and straight it reads neat and close to the head.
- Thin rolled brim. The edge rolls instead of doubling into a cuff, so it fits easily under a hood.
- Black hides wear. Makeup, rain marks and lint show far less on black than on light knits.
Knit Beanie for Every Coat
A knit beanie in black works with a wool coat, a parka, a leather jacket and a puffer, so it tends to be the first hat grabbed on the way out. Because it has no pattern and no pom, it never clashes with a printed scarf or patterned gloves. It also slips into a coat pocket, since a single-layer knit with a rolled edge folds small.
A Blend That Keeps Its Shape
Most of the yarn is baby alpaca, which brings the softness, and the rest is polyamide and a little wool. The polyamide is the strong part of the blend: it adds abrasion resistance where the hat rubs on a collar and helps the knit recover after being stretched. That combination is why the slouch stays a slouch and does not turn into a sagging bag after a winter of wear.
Slouched Back or Pulled Down
For the slouch, set the brim at the hairline and let the extra knit rest at the back of the head. For a closer fit, pull the beanie straight down to the eyebrows and fold any extra length up at the back. On the coldest days, pull it down over the tops of the ears, where most people feel the wind first. Allpa's care label says to hand wash it cold with a mild detergent, reshape it while wet and lay it flat to dry.
Black Essential Beanie Day to Day
Will a black alpaca beanie fade in the wash? Cold water and shade are what keep a dark knit dark, since heat and sunlight are what dull the dye. Wash it alone or with other darks the first time, and dry it indoors.
Will a large head fit this beanie? The knit stretches to fit most adult heads, and the slouch gives extra room at the back. On a large head it simply sits closer, with less slouch.
What gloves go with a black beanie? Black gloves in a similar knit make a clean set, as in the photo with black fingerless gloves. Leather gloves in black or brown look sharper with a wool coat.
