Product Type: Hats & Caps

This charcoal beanie is a dark heathered gray, close to black from across the street and full of lighter flecks up close. It is Allpa's Essential Knit, finished with a curled brim and a relaxed slouch behind. Baby alpaca makes up 70% of the yarn in Allpa's listing, polyamide 23% and wool the last 7%, sized as one unisex fit.

  • Charcoal, not black. Softer next to the face than black, with flecks that catch the light.
  • Forgiving color. The heathered yarn masks lint and the light fuzz new alpaca sheds in its first weeks.
  • Unisex single size. Allpa makes it in one size for everyone, so it can be shared or handed on.
  • Easy go-between. Charcoal ties a black coat to gray pants or blue jeans without a hard line.

Charcoal Beanie or Black Beanie

A charcoal beanie does almost everything a black one does, with fewer drawbacks. Pure black can drain color from the face in flat winter light, while charcoal has enough lightness in the flecks to keep the complexion warm. It still matches a black coat, yet it also looks right with gray, navy, olive and camel, so one hat covers most of a winter wardrobe. Anyone with a black beanie at home will find charcoal a natural second hat rather than a near duplicate.

Early Shedding in New Alpaca

New alpaca blends often release a soft haze of loose fiber during the first few wears. That is the shortest fibers working free of the yarn, and it settles quickly. Give the hat a good shake outdoors and a pass with a lint roller after the first wears, and the surface turns smooth and calm. Allpa says alpaca is less prone to pilling than many fibers, and the dark heather hides what little does appear.

Pairing a Dark Gray Hat

Charcoal looks best either matched or contrasted on purpose. Matched, with charcoal gloves and a long charcoal scarf, it makes a calm tonal set like the one in the photos. Contrasted, with a cream sweater or a camel coat, it frames the face and lets the lighter pieces glow. Either way the slouch at the back keeps the look relaxed.

Charcoal Beanie Care and Fit

Is charcoal better than black for a first beanie? For most wardrobes, yes. It works with black and with every warmer neutral too, and it shows less lint along the way.

Will the color run in the wash? Dark dyes may give up a trace of color the first time, so keep its first cold hand wash solo, as Allpa asks, and dry it flat.

Does it stay on in the wind? Pulled down over the ears it holds well, because the rolled brim sits snug. Worn pushed far back for a slouchier look, it is better on calmer days.
