Product Type: Hats & Caps

This cashmere hat from Portolano comes in a two-ply rib with a cuff you fold back. Portolano lists it as 100% cashmere, 8 inches tall with the cuff folded and 12 inches unfolded, in black, chocolate brown and dusty rose. A rib knit is the classic hat stitch, and in two-ply cashmere it is soft, close and quietly warm.

  • A 4 inch cuff. The difference between 12 and 8 inches is a cuff about 4 inches deep, so the band over your ears is two layers thick.
  • Two-ply yarn. Two strands twisted together make a sturdier, warmer knit than a single ply.
  • Rib that hugs. The ribbed stitch stretches and springs back, so the hat holds its shape on the head.

Cashmere Hat with a Deep Cuff

A cashmere hat with a turned-back cuff gives you two hats in one. Worn folded, it sits at 8 inches and covers the ears with a double layer of cashmere. Unfolded to 12 inches, it slouches at the back for a relaxed look. The doubled cuff is what makes a thin, soft knit warm enough for a real winter day.

What Two-Ply Cashmere Means

Ply is the number of thin strands twisted together into one yarn. Two-ply yarn is stronger and more even than single ply, and it pills less because each strand is held by the other. That is why two-ply is the usual standard for cashmere knits meant to be worn often. On this hat it also gives the ribs a clear, defined line.

Black, Chocolate or Dusty Rose

Black is the safe pick for a black or gray coat. Chocolate brown is warmer and looks rich beside camel and cream; one gallery frame pairs it with a matching brown scarf and a camel coat. Dusty rose is a muted berry pink, soft rather than sweet, and it brings color to the face without the brightness of a true pink.

Looking After the Ribbed Cashmere Hat

Can I wash a cashmere hat at home? Portolano recommends dry cleaning. If you choose to hand wash, use cool water and a gentle wool wash, blot out the water with a towel and dry it on a flat surface, but follow the label for the safest result.

Will the rib stretch out over time? Rib knit recovers well, and two-ply yarn helps. Let the hat rest flat between wears instead of hanging it on a hook, which pulls the ribs open.

Who suits a cuffed beanie? Almost everyone. Wear the cuff low for a fuller look, or fold it higher to show more forehead, which flatters a rounder face.
