Product Type: Hats & Caps

This gray beanie is a soft heather gray from Allpa's Essential Knit line, plain and slouchy, with a thin rolled brim and spare length behind the crown. Its yarn is 70 percent baby alpaca by Allpa's label, strengthened with 23 percent polyamide and given body by 7 percent wool, and it comes in one size Allpa describes as unisex.

  • Heather gray. Light flecks run through the gray, so it never looks flat in daylight.
  • Thin rolled brim. A soft curl at the edge instead of a folded cuff, so no ridge presses across the forehead.
  • Pocket sized. It rolls small enough to live in a coat pocket on mild afternoons.
  • Room to slouch. The spare knit gathers behind the head or comes down to cover the ears on a raw day.

Gray Beanie Between Black and White

A gray beanie is the easy middle ground of winter hats. Black can look stark under bright winter light and white shows every mark, while heather gray sits comfortably with a black parka, a camel coat or a navy peacoat. Gray also softens the face, so the hat looks friendly rather than severe in photos. Wear it pushed back with a little hair showing for a relaxed look, or pull it low and straight across the brow on a raw day.

How to Wash a Beanie

How to wash a beanie comes down to cool water and patience. Run cold water into a sink with a small squeeze of wool wash, press the hat under, and let it soak for about ten minutes. Rinse in clean cold water, then press the water out against the side of the sink rather than wringing. Roll it in a towel, then dry it over an upturned bowl, which keeps the crown round and the slouch where it belongs. That is the method Allpa's label points to: cold water, hands only, shaped while damp.

Keeping the Rolled Brim Neat

A rolled brim is a living edge: the knit curls on its own, and after a wash or a season in a drawer it can loosen or flatten. Roll it back into place with your fingertips while the hat is still damp from washing, then let it dry that way and the curl sets again. Stored flat or loosely rolled, never crushed under heavy sweaters, it keeps the soft roll that makes the hat look finished.

Heather Gray Alpaca Beanie Wear

Does a gray beanie show lint? Much less than black. The heathered yarn blends stray fibers in, so a quick shake before you head out is usually all it needs.

Is machine washing ever safe for it? Allpa asks for hand washing, and that is the safer choice, since agitation and warm water can shrink and mat the wool and alpaca fibers.

Will it fit over a ponytail? A low ponytail or a loose braid tucks under the slouch at the back. A high bun pushes the crown up, so wear the hat further back on those days.
