Product Type: Hats & Caps

This alpaca hat is knit from two shades of gray woven together, which gives the crown a fine speckled texture, almost like tweed. A solid pale gray band runs around the brim as a contrast. Its label reads 100% alpaca, one size, and Allpa cuts it as a slouchy beanie that can be worn loose at the back or pulled down snug.

  • Two-tone speckle. Two gray yarns knit together read as one soft heather from afar and as a fine pattern up close.
  • Contrast brim band. The lighter band frames the face and gives the plain shape a finished edge.
  • Pure alpaca warmth. One fiber only, alpaca, which stays light on the head while it holds heat.

Alpaca Hat Versus Wool Hat

An alpaca hat and a sheep wool hat look alike, but they behave differently. Alpaca fiber is smoother and carries no lanolin, so it feels less prickly on the forehead. It is also partly hollow, which gives it warmth for its weight. For anyone who finds wool hats itchy, alpaca is the first fiber worth trying. Wool, in turn, springs back faster after stretching, which is why pure alpaca knits are best stored folded rather than hung.

Why Two Grays Beat One

A single flat gray can look dull next to the face. Two grays knit together create small points of light and shadow, so the hat looks textured even in a photo taken from across the room. The speckle also masks lint and little spots, and the pale brim band repeats the lighter of the two yarns, which ties the pattern together.

Pairing a Gray Alpaca Hat

Gray sits between black and white, so it goes with both, and it softens the contrast of a black coat. Try it with a navy peacoat, a camel coat or a charcoal parka. Repeat the pale band with a light gray scarf or gloves and the outfit looks deliberate. The photos pair it with matching light gray fingerless gloves for exactly that reason. Allpa's care label says to hand wash it cold with a mild detergent, reshape it while wet and lay it flat to dry.

Owning the Gray Interwoven Beanie

Is alpaca warmer than wool for a hat? Gram for gram, alpaca is generally counted as warmer, because of the air pockets in its fibers. On the head that means a thinner knit can feel as warm as a thicker wool one.

Does the contrast band fold up? It is a flat band at the edge, not a cuff, so it sits single layer at the brim. Wear the band at the hairline or pull the hat lower so it covers the ears.

Where should an alpaca beanie spend the summer? Clean it first, then fold it into a cotton bag or a drawer with cedar. Moths look for natural fibers that carry skin oils, and a clean hat is much less tempting.
