This one carries a lower age rating than almost everything else on the shelf. The Incredible Creatures line it comes from is cleared from eighteen months rather than the three years that covers most figures, because the pieces are larger and have no small parts to come away. For anyone buying for a toddler that single line decides it.
- Cleared from eighteen months. A lower floor than the three year rating most figures carry.
- Long and very low. 6.75 across but only 2.25 high, so it slides onto a crowded shelf.
- Banding cut in. The shell rings are grooved into the body rather than printed on top.
- Gray over pink. Two tones, with the soft skin picked out separately by hand.
Built for Smaller Hands
The larger format exists because a bigger object has nowhere to hide a choking hazard. Everything on this figure is part of one body, with no ears, tails or horns thin enough to snap off into a mouth, which is precisely why the rating drops. It also means it survives being dropped on a hard floor rather more often than a delicate sculpt would.
Grooves Instead of Print
The bands across the back are the whole visual identity of an armadillo, and cutting them into the surface rather than printing them is what keeps them there. Printed detail wears at the high points first, which on a banded animal is exactly where the pattern lives. Grooved detail simply cannot rub off.
Always Four, Always Identical
A nine banded armadillo gives birth to quadruplets, every time, and all four are identical because they develop from a single egg. There is no other mammal that does this reliably, which is why medical researchers have taken such an interest in the species.
Questions About the Armadillo
What age is it rated for? Eighteen months and over, which is lower than most figures in the catalogue.
How much shelf height does it need? Very little. It is 2.25 inches tall on a 6.75 inch body.
Will the banding wear off? No, it is grooved into the surface rather than applied over it.
What are the two colors? A gray shell with the softer skin picked out in pale pink.
