The train is fanned, and it is fanned permanently, because this is a fixed sculpt rather than a posable one. That single decision is what you are buying: four inches of spread feather carrying its full ring of eyespots, held open for good, where a bird does it for a few seconds at a time and a lesser model skips it entirely.
- Train held open. Fanned in the display posture rather than closed and trailing.
- Four by three inches. The fan is the width, so it needs depth of shelf rather than height.
- Eyespots picked out. Each ring painted individually across the green feather panel.
- Iridescent blue neck. Deep metallic blue set against the paler spread behind it.
Counting the Eyespots
The rings on a peacock train are called ocelli, and each one is a bullseye of blue, bronze and green laid over a single feather. On a four inch model every ocellus has to be placed by hand, which is the most exacting paint job in this range and the fastest way to judge whether a peacock figure was made carefully.
The Train Is Not the Tail
Those long feathers grow from the back rather than the tail itself. The real tail is a short stiff fan of plain feathers hidden underneath, and its whole job is to prop the train upright. The rear view here shows exactly that: dull supporting feathers behind a display that only works from the front.
Peacock, Peahen, Peafowl
Only the male is a peacock. The female is a peahen and the species is peafowl, so a sentence about peacocks nesting describes something that does not happen. It is a small correction and one of the more satisfying ones to be able to make.
Questions About the Peacock
Is the train fanned or closed? Fanned and fixed that way, since the figure is a single moulded pose.
How much room does it need? Four inches across and three tall, so measure the shelf depth rather than the height.
Are the eyespots painted individually? Yes, each ocellus is placed by hand across the green panel.
Which bird is this? A male. Only males carry a train; the female is a peahen.
