Product Type: Animal Figurines

At 11.7 inches nose to tail this is the largest single figure in the whole Safari Ltd catalogue, and size changes what a model has to get right. Wrinkles that would pass at four inches are obvious at twelve, so the hide here is carved into the surface across the entire body rather than suggested with paint. It is the piece people pick up first.

  • Largest in the catalogue. 11.7 long, 8.4 tall and 5.85 across the ears.
  • Hide carved throughout. Wrinkling cut into the surface, which is what large scale demands.
  • Tusks in one casting. No glued join to work loose over years of handling.
  • A gift sized object. Big enough to be the present rather than part of one.

Why Scale Raises the Bar

Small figures hide their shortcuts. A foot long animal cannot: every flat panel and every soft edge is visible from across a room. The test for a large model is whether it still rewards a close look, and the honest way to check is the skin between the ear and the shoulder, which is where a rushed sculpt goes smooth.

The Ear Is the Species

An African elephant's ear is huge and roughly the shape of its continent; an Asian elephant's is small and rounded. Those ears are radiators, moving blood close to the surface to shed heat, so the shape is equipment rather than decoration. Look at the trunk tip too: two gripping lips here, where an Asian elephant has one.

Finding It a Home

Almost a foot long will not tuck between books, and it will dominate whatever group it joins. That is either the reason to buy it or the reason to buy something smaller, and it is worth deciding before the box is opened rather than after.

Questions About the Elephant Figure

How large is it exactly? Close to a foot from trunk to tail, and a little over eight inches at the shoulder.

African or Asian? African, told by the large continent shaped ear and the two lipped trunk tip.

What is the finish? Hand applied paint over carved hide, so the texture holds up close.

Is it safe for young children? Rated three and up, in PVC free of lead and phthalates.
