Product Type: Wallets

A slim wallet earns its keep by what it refuses to carry. Cortez is TORONATA's snap wallet: seven card slots, an ID window inside and another outside, a hidden compartment for bills and a snap that holds it shut, at 4.35 by 3.15 inches and 0.4 inch thick. TORONATA lists the material as 100% full-grain leather.

  • Seven card slots. One card per slot, which is what keeps a slim wallet slim.
  • Two ID windows. One outside for the card you show most, one inside for the card you would rather not flash.
  • Hidden bill compartment. Folded notes ride out of sight behind the cards.
  • Snap closure. The stack stays compressed, and cards cannot fan out in a pocket or a bag.

What Is Full Grain Leather

What is full grain leather, the material TORONATA lists for Cortez? It is the outermost layer of the hide with its natural surface left on: not sanded, not corrected, not stamped with an artificial pattern. That surface is the densest part of the skin, which is why this grade outlasts the others and darkens into a patina instead of wearing through a coating. You can recognize it by small irregularities: pores, faint scars, a slight difference in tone between two wallets of the same color. Lower grades are buffed smooth and sealed, so they look uniform when new and crack where they flex.

What Fits in the Cortez

A payment card measures 3.37 by 2.13 inches, so the 4.35 by 3.15 inch body covers it with a margin all around. A US bill is 6.14 inches long and needs one fold to fit the hidden compartment. Loaded with seven cards, two IDs and a few notes, the wallet still goes in a front pocket, which is where a slim wallet belongs: a wallet you do not sit on keeps its shape and keeps your cards flat. Seven slots means seven cards. Doubling them up stretches the slots for good, because leather gives and does not spring back.

Eight Colors and How They Age

Cortez comes in Tan, Red, Mink, Navy Blue, Black, Gray, Light Brown and Dark Brown, in TORONATA's names. The light shades, Tan and Light Brown, change fastest, picking up a deeper tone at the edges and the snap within a few months of handling. Black and Navy Blue change least. Whatever the color, wipe the wallet with a dry cloth now and then and keep it away from hand sanitizer, since alcohol strips the finish where it lands.

Leather Grades, Pockets and Break-In

What is full grain leather compared with top grain? Top grain has had its surface sanded to remove marks and is then finished with a coating, which makes it thinner and more uniform. The unsanded grade keeps the hide's own surface, so it is stronger, shows natural marks and builds a patina where a coated leather would wear through.

Does a slim wallet fit a front pocket? This one does. It is smaller than any current phone in both directions, and at 0.4 inch it is thinner than most. Front pocket carry also keeps the wallet out of reach in a crowd.

How do you break in a snap wallet? Load it with the cards you will carry, snap it shut and use it for a week. The slots ease to the thickness of one card each and stay there. Do not wet the leather or force two cards into a slot to speed things up.
