Almost every figure in this range is one animal. This is two, and they come out of a single casting rather than being made separately and joined, which is harder to mold and the reason the cub sits against the mother instead of merely beside her. There is no seam to open up and nothing to lose down the back of a shelf.

  • Six inches long. 2.75 tall, which is compact for a two figure composition.
  • Contact points sculpted. The cub leans in rather than standing alongside.
  • Coat painted in tones. Tawny graded darker along the back and lighter underneath.

One Casting, Two Animals

A pair made as separate pieces has to be glued, and glue is what fails first on a toy that gets carried around. Molding both animals as one object removes that failure entirely and is why this piece will still be intact when a two part group has long since parted company. The trade is that the pose is fixed.

The Pose Is the Product

Because it cannot be rearranged, the composition has to be worth keeping, and this one puts the cub against the mother's flank in the posture that actually reads as protection. Bought for a shelf, that is the whole point. Bought for open ended play, a child may prefer figures that can be moved apart.

Lionesses Do the Hunting

The females of a pride do most of the hunting and nearly all of the cub rearing, and they hunt cooperatively in a way male lions generally do not. A figure of a lioness with young is therefore closer to the working life of a pride than a maned male on his own ever is.
