Why the Fruit Is There

Leather and oud together can close a composition down completely, leaving something dense with nowhere to breathe. Rhubarb is sharp and green, raspberry is tart and slightly wine like, and between them they punch two windows into a very solid wall. Remove them and this becomes a much more predictable dark fragrance.

How It Wears at Length

The first hour is saffron and leather with the fruit flickering underneath. The middle brings jasmine, patchouli and pink pepper, which is where it is at its most complicated. From there it settles into amber, oud, vanilla and sandalwood and stays there for a long time, warm and dark and very close to the skin.

Reading the Room

This is a black tie fragrance, a winter fragrance, and an evening fragrance. It rewards a setting where the air is cold and the company is staying put. In an open plan office in June it would be a genuinely poor decision, and that is worth naming rather than discovering at eleven in the morning.

As a bottle empties, the air replacing the liquid slowly concentrates what is left. The final third of any fragrance tends to smell a little richer and last a little longer than the first. On something already this heavy, that is worth knowing: the two sprays that suited you in month one may want to be one spray by month ten.

Is the fruit noticeable? Just enough. Rhubarb and raspberry lift the leather rather than sweetening it.

What is the right amount? A single spray. Nothing else here carries this much weight.

Can it be worn in daylight? In deep winter, yes. Otherwise it belongs after dark.

Is it only for men? Not at all. The jasmine and raspberry soften it well past the name.
