Sandalwood is the calmest material in perfumery. Creamy, milky, softly woody and almost warm to the touch, it has been used in incense and ritual for thousands of years for reasons that become obvious the moment you wear it. Here it is the subject rather than an ingredient, with smoke drifting across it.

  • Sandalwood as the subject. Not a supporting note but the whole idea.
  • Smoke over the top. A dry edge that keeps it from turning soft.
  • A whisper of leather. Depth underneath the creaminess.
  • Sits very close. Intimate rather than announced.

Why Sandalwood Feels Calm

Most woods in perfumery are dry, sharp or resinous. Sandalwood is the exception: round, gentle and faintly sweet, more like warm dairy than like timber, and that softness is why it turns up wherever a fragrance wants to feel settled. It is also one of the slowest materials to leave the skin, which is why the last hours are still clearly the same scent you put on.

Used well it is the material that makes a composition feel finished rather than assembled, and it is doing exactly that here.

The Smoke on Top

Left alone the sandalwood would be almost too comfortable. A smoky edge running across it introduces tension and keeps the composition awake, and a faint leather note underneath does the same job from below. Between them the softness never turns into sleepiness.

How Close It Wears

This is among the most intimate fragrances in the collection. It does not travel and it is not meant to, which makes it a natural choice for anywhere the people around you have not opted in. What it gives up in presence it returns in the quality of what is actually there.

Scent a Drawer Quietly

A cotton pad with one spray on it, tucked into a drawer, will quietly scent folded clothes for weeks. It is far gentler than spraying garments directly, there is no risk of marking anything, and the effect is a faint background rather than a statement. Replace the pad every month or so.

Questions About Sandalwood Smoke

What does sandalwood smell like? Creamy, soft and faintly sweet, nearer to warm dairy than to dry timber.

Is the smoke strong? Subtle. It is an edge across the wood rather than a bonfire.

Does it project? Very little by design. This one is meant to be found rather than noticed.

Is it unisex? Entirely. Sandalwood has no gender in perfumery at all.
