Laurel is a cooking herb and it is sitting in the opening of this fragrance, which almost nothing else does. The same bay leaf that goes into a stew, dry and slightly bitter and faintly medicinal, cutting across the grapefruit and stopping it from reading as breakfast. It is a small decision with a large effect.

  • Bay leaf in the opening. A culinary herb against the grapefruit.
  • A rose undertone. Soft and barely there, under a dry composition.
  • Cedarwood and vetiver. The dry structural heart.
  • Moss in the base. Green depth beneath the amber and musk.

Grapefruit Is Not Lemon

Where lemon is sharp and simple, grapefruit carries a bitter, slightly sulphurous edge that makes it far more interesting and far harder to use. It is the citrus that reads as an actual fruit rather than a cleaning product, and the laurel beside it pushes that bitterness even further. The result is an opening with real bite.

Bitter citrus and dry woods belong to the morning and the afternoon. This works under a jacket at an office, at a long lunch, on a spring day when the air is clear. After dark it reads as underdressed rather than wrong, which is worth knowing when you are deciding what to reach for.
