Coffee and chocolate in the middle of a men's fragrance, with incense and myrrh underneath. That combination should not work and it absolutely does: the edible part gives it warmth and the resins give it a churchlike seriousness that stops the whole thing turning into pudding. It is the most unusual composition here by a distance.

  • Coffee in the opening. Bitter and roasted against juniper and cypress.
  • Chocolate and honey. A genuinely edible heart with leather through it.
  • Incense and myrrh. Resins that give the base its weight and smoke.
  • Made for a night out. Nobody wears this to a Tuesday morning meeting.

The Coffee Is Not Sweet

Coffee as a fragrance note is bitter, dark and slightly burnt, nothing like a flavored latte. Sitting beside juniper berry and cypress it reads almost like an evergreen forest with an espresso in it, which is a strange sentence and an accurate description. Orris adds a cool powdery edge that keeps the opening from getting too dense.

Chocolate and a Leather Thread

Patchouli, vanilla, honey, leather and chocolate is the middle, and it is as rich as that list sounds. The leather is what saves it. Without that dry, slightly bitter thread running through, the honey and chocolate would collapse into sweetness within an hour. With it, the heart stays complicated for four or five.

Where the Smoke Comes In

Incense and myrrh in the base take the fragrance somewhere unexpected at the end of the night. Both are resins with a dry, smoky, faintly sacred quality, and against the sweetness above them the contrast is the whole point. What is left on your collar the next morning is smoke rather than dessert.

Do Not Test Too Many

Smelling more than three fragrances in a row overwhelms the nose and everything after the third starts to blur together. If you are choosing between several, try two, walk away, and come back later rather than working through the whole shelf. Coffee is a myth as a reset; fresh air and time are what actually work.
