Every other figure in this range answers to a photograph of a real animal. This one answers to nobody, which frees the sculptor to do the thing none of the wildlife pieces can: a finish that changes as you move. The pearl coat over the body and wings shifts through the spectrum with the viewing angle, and it is the reason the piece disappoints in pictures and does not in the hand.
- Pearl finish shifts. Color changes with angle, which no flat photograph can show.
- Wings are the width. 6.5 across against 5.5 tall, so allow for the span.
- Invented, not observed. The only piece here not built from a living reference.
- Direct light suits it. A lamp or a window brings the coat up; deep shade flattens it.
This Finish Needs Real Light
Pearlescent coatings work by stacking translucent layers that bend light instead of absorbing it, so what you see depends entirely on where the light is. Put this in a dim corner and it reads as pale plastic; put it near a lamp or a window and the wings run through a whole spectrum. Placement matters more here than on anything else in the range.
Measure Across, Not Up
The span is 6.5 inches against a height of 5.5, which is the reverse of what most figures do and catches people out on a narrow shelf. Measure across rather than up. It also means the wings are the first thing a sleeve catches, so it belongs behind the front edge rather than on it.
No Animal to Copy
Wildlife sculpts are constrained by what the animal actually looks like, and that constraint is most of their value. A dragon has no such limit, so what is being judged instead is design: whether the proportions hold together and whether the finish earns its place. On both counts this one is doing something the rest of the shelf cannot.
Questions About the Fairy Dragon
Does it really change color? Yes, with the angle you look from, because the coat bends light rather than absorbing it.
What is the wingspan? 6.5 inches across, on a figure 5.5 inches tall.
Where should it go? Somewhere it catches direct light. In shade the coat has nothing to work with.
Is it a real species? No. It is the one invented creature in a range otherwise built on live animals.
