Hardware is where a leash fails, and brass is the reason a leash outlives its clip less often. Solid brass does not rust, so the spring inside the gate keeps working through wet winters that seize a plated zinc clip. It is heavier, which you feel in the hand, and it dulls to a warm patina rather than losing a plated finish in flakes. Look for solid brass rather than brass-plated, because plating over zinc gives you the appearance and none of the behavior.
