Product Type: Mini Dress

Corduroy is what a babydoll dress wears when the leaves turn. The Charlie is a teal corduroy dress with a band collar, a short buttoned placket, full balloon sleeves gathered into cuffs below the elbow, and a babydoll skirt that falls loose from a seam high on the chest, with pockets on both sides.

  • Fine-wale texture. The ribs catch the light, so a solid teal never looks flat.
  • Balloon sleeves. Volume through the arm, gathered in a cuff that stays put when you push it up.
  • Band collar. A small stand collar reads neat and suits a short necklace or none at all.

Teal Corduroy for Cool Months

Teal is a blue deep enough to sit beside fall's browns and a green bright enough to stand out against gray skies. On corduroy it changes slightly as you move, lighter where the ribs face the light and darker in the grooves. That shift gives a one-color dress real depth, which is why it can carry a whole outfit with nothing more than boots and a bag.

This is a polyester corduroy, so it keeps its color through many washes and resists the bagging at the seat that cotton cords can develop. It still has the soft, brushed feel that makes people want to touch a sleeve.

Keeping the Ribs Raised

Corduroy has a pile, and pile flattens under pressure and heat. Turn it inside out, use a gentle cycle, and smooth the ribs with your hand while it hangs to dry. If it needs pressing, iron from the inside with a towel underneath, or simply steam it; ironing the face crushes the ribs into shiny lines that never recover.

It comes in women's S (4/6), M (8/10), L (12/14) and XL (16/18), so a size 10 orders the M and a 14 orders the L. The babydoll cut is roomy below the chest seam, so choose by bust and shoulder width rather than hips.

Coats Over Full Sleeves

Balloon sleeves need a coat with room in the arm. A wrap coat, a cape or an oversized blazer slides over them easily, while a slim tailored jacket crushes the gathers. The gathered cuffs keep the sleeves from slipping down to your hands, so they stay out of your coffee and off your keyboard.

Under the coat, the dress does the rest. A cream clutch, as the photos show, keeps teal light; a cognac bag and brown boots make it richer and deeper.

Teal Babydoll from October On

How to style a babydoll dress in cold weather? Add opaque tights and knee boots or ankle boots, then a long coat that falls past the hem. A babydoll looks best when the layer on top is either much longer or much shorter than the dress.

Which colors sit well beside teal? Camel, cognac, cream, rust and mustard all work. Black is fine for shoes, but brown keeps the teal glowing.

Is corduroy too warm for spring? On cool spring days it is right, with bare legs and loafers or white sneakers. In real heat corduroy is too warm.
