Product Type: Lip Care

The tingle is not a side effect, it is the whole mechanism. Peppermint oil mildly irritates the surface, blood flow to the area rises in response, and the tissue swells a little. That is what reads as fullness, it is temporary, and it fades along with the tingle over the following hour.

  • Tingle equals mechanism. Peppermint is doing the visible part, not the comfort part.
  • It wears off. The effect passes with the sensation rather than building up over weeks.
  • Shea and apricot kernel. These are the two doing the softening, with coconut oil behind them.
  • Not on splits. Peppermint on broken skin stings and there is nothing to gain.

What the Tingle Actually Is

Peppermint oil is a mild irritant, which sounds worse than it is and is exactly why it appears in products like this one. The body responds to it by sending more blood to the surface, and more blood in thin tissue shows as a little swelling and a little color. Nothing is being added to the lip and nothing is being changed in it, which is the honest description of what you are buying.

Lips Cannot Oil Themselves

There are no sebaceous glands anywhere in lip tissue, so lips have no way to produce the film that keeps the rest of your skin from drying out. Everything protecting them arrives from outside or from saliva, and saliva makes it worse as it evaporates. That single fact is why lips need an occlusive rather than a moisturizer.

Overnight Is the Real Work

Shea butter, apricot kernel oil and coconut oil sit on the surface and slow the water leaving it, and eight uninterrupted hours is the longest stretch they will ever get. Worn overnight this is a genuinely useful product; worn under lipstick for twenty minutes it is mostly a sensation. Choose the night rather than the morning and it earns its place.

When Not to Use It

Split, cracked or cold-sore prone lips should not meet peppermint oil, and the sting will tell you that immediately. Anyone sensitive to mint or to fragrance in general has a reason to patch a small amount on the inner wrist first. And anybody hoping for a lasting change in lip shape is buying the wrong category of product entirely.

Questions About the Lip Mask

How long does the effect last? About as long as the tingle, so an hour or so. It does not accumulate with repeated use.

Is the tingling a bad sign? Not on lips that are intact. It is the peppermint working as intended. A sting rather than a tingle means the surface is broken.

Can it be worn during the day? It can, though the softening comes from hours of contact, so an overnight wear gets far more out of it.

Does it work under lipstick? It is an oil-rich mask, so anything applied over it slides. Use it at night and put color on a clean surface.
