Product Type: Body Serum

Most moisturizers are sold on what they put onto skin. An occlusive is the opposite kind of product and is judged on what it stops from leaving. Lanolin closely resembles the lipids skin makes for itself, and its job in this bottle is to slow the water already in your skin from evaporating out of it. That single fact decides how and when it should be used.

  • It seals rather than soaks. The work happens by holding water in, not by adding water on.
  • The concentrated one here. A little covers a patch that would take a handful of the oil.
  • Wool wax, so patch test first. A small share of eczema-prone skin does react to lanolin.

Sealing In Beats Adding On

Water has to be present before anything can trap it, which is why an occlusive on bone dry skin locks in the dryness rather than fixing it. The order is water first, seal second, and getting that backwards is the commonest reason a rich product seems to do nothing. It also explains why this format works better than a lotion on skin that is rough and flaking rather than merely tight.

Two Minutes After The Towel

Straight out of a shower or a bath the surface still holds a film of water, and that is the window worth using. Pat rather than rub, leave the skin faintly damp, and put the serum on within a couple of minutes. Wait twenty and the water has gone, and you are applying an expensive seal to nothing. Cool water rather than hot also leaves more behind to seal.

Patches, Not The Whole Body

This is the most concentrated format in the line and it is priced and sized accordingly, so spreading it thinly over a whole body wastes it. Put it on the two or three worst areas, elbows, shins, the backs of the hands, and use the oil or the cream everywhere else. Anyone whose skin only turns rough in winter can keep it as a cold-weather product rather than a daily one.

Test It On An Inner Arm

Lanolin comes from sheep's wool, which puts it outside a plant-only routine, and a small proportion of people with eczema-prone skin are sensitive to it specifically. Anyone who has never used a lanolin product should put a little on the inner forearm and leave it a full day before going near an area that is already sore. Fragrance is worth checking on the same principle.

Questions About The Shea And Lanolin Serum

How much goes on one patch? Far less than instinct suggests. A pea-sized amount rubbed between the fingers first covers an elbow, and any shine left after a minute means it was too much.

Does it replace the cream or sit under it? Either works. On the worst areas it goes on alone; where skin needs body as well as sealing, the cream can go over the top of it.

Why does damp skin matter so much? Because an occlusive holds water in and cannot supply any. Applied to dry skin it seals in the dryness, which is the exact opposite of the point.
