A clear gloss has no opinion of its own. It reflects whatever surface it is sitting on, which means it makes smooth lips look glassy and rough lips look worse, and that is what decides whether it flatters you or not. There is no pigment here to cover anything up.

  • Shine only. Reflective rather than pigmented, so it adds no color of its own.
  • It amplifies texture. Smooth reads glassy and flaky reads patchy under the same layer.
  • Goes over anything. Bare lips, a lipstick, or a stain, without changing the shade.

Shine Follows the Surface

A reflective layer is a mirror, and a mirror shows the shape it is laid across. Flat skin sends light back in one direction and reads as a highlight; broken skin scatters it and reads as a dull patch with bright specks in it. The gloss is doing exactly the same thing in both cases, which is why two people get very different results from one tube.

Clear Adds Nothing to Color

Pigment and shine are separate jobs and this one only does the second. Over a lipstick it deepens the shade slightly and makes it look wet; over bare lips it does nothing but catch light. If you were hoping for a wash of color from the fruit cereal name, that is not what is in the tube.

The Last Step, Not the First

The most reliable use is as a last step: color first, then a small amount pressed into the middle of the lower lip and blotted outward. Applying it edge to edge is what makes a gloss migrate into the lines around the mouth, and keeping it central buys most of the effect with none of that.

When a Gloss Disappoints

On dry or peeling lips a clear gloss is the wrong first purchase and a balm or a scrub comes before it. Anyone who dislikes a sticky feel should know that shine and slip come from the same thickness, so a genuinely glassy finish cannot also be weightless. And a sweet scent this close to the nose is noticeable all day, which some people like and some do not.

Questions About the Lip Gloss

Does it have any color in it? No. It is a clear reflective finish, so the shade you see is whatever is underneath.

Will it work over a matte lipstick? Yes, and it changes the finish rather than the shade. Press it on rather than dragging, so the color below stays put.

Is it sticky? It has the weight a high shine finish needs. Less product gives less tack and still reads glossy.

Can it be worn alone? That is the simplest way to use it, on lips that are already smooth.
