Five materials, and every one of them earns its place. Bergamot at the top, cinnamon and nutmeg through the middle, amber and patchouli underneath, and nothing else in the bottle to get in the way. It is the leanest men's composition here and the easiest to actually recognize when someone else is wearing it.

  • Five notes total. Nothing hidden, nothing padding it out.
  • Baking spice, used dry. Cinnamon and nutmeg without any sweetness.
  • Patchouli underneath. Earthy weight that keeps the spice grounded.
  • Works in any season. Bright enough for spring, warm enough for winter.

Spice Without Sugar

Cinnamon and nutmeg together will suggest baking to almost anyone, and that is the trap this composition avoids. There is no vanilla, no caramel and no honey anywhere in it, so the spice reads as warmth rather than as dessert. What you get is closer to a spice tin than a kitchen, dry and slightly woody all the way down.

The Patchouli Question

Patchouli has an unfair reputation built on cheap oils and the seventies. Used properly it is dark, damp and earthy, the smell of soil after rain, and it is one of the most useful base materials there is. Here it takes the cinnamon and gives it somewhere solid to stand instead of drifting off as spice usually does.

An Everyday Bottle

Because there is so little in it, there is very little to tire of. This is a fragrance that survives being worn three days a week for a year, which is more than can be said for anything complicated. It is the bottle that ends up nearly empty while the interesting ones sit half full.

Never Shake the Bottle

The instinct to shake comes from cosmetics, where it helps, and here it does the opposite. Shaking pushes air into the liquid, and air is what slowly changes a fragrance over the years. Perfume is fully blended when it is filled and it never needs mixing. Pick it up, spray it, put it down.

Is it a sweet fragrance? No. The cinnamon and nutmeg are used dry, with no vanilla behind them.

Is the patchouli heavy? It is earthy rather than heavy, and it sits below the spice rather than over it.

Which season is it for? All of them. There is enough brightness and enough warmth to go either way.

How simple is the composition? Five notes, which is the fewest of any men's fragrance here.
