Everyday Perfume

Every other shelf in this range is chosen against a known room: a desk, an evening, a season. An everyday bottle is chosen against a sequence of rooms you have not seen yet, and that is a different specification altogether. What it needs is adaptability rather than character.

You are buying for a day you cannot see

An occasion fragrance has one job in one place and can be selected precisely. An everyday one goes to the supermarket, into somebody else's car, through a school gate and into a meeting that appeared mid morning. None of that was planned when you sprayed it. A composition that is ideal in one of those settings and wrong in the rest ends up back in the cabinet within a month, which is why the requirement is mid weight, moderate reach and nothing that needs explaining.

  • It has to survive being wrong about the day. The plan changes and the fragrance does not.
  • Moderate is the specification, not a compromise. A bottle that fits everywhere is doing something harder than a bottle that dazzles once.
  • Nothing that needs a preamble. If people regularly ask what it is, you are wearing a signature and using it as a workhorse.

Everyday and signature pull in opposite directions

They get bought as one thing and they want opposite qualities. A signature is a deliberate decision to be recognized by one smell, and it should be distinctive enough that people register its absence. An everyday bottle is simply what is within reach on a Tuesday, and its virtue is that it never gets in the way of anything. Buying a signature and then wearing it daily is the most reliable way to get tired of a fragrance you paid a lot for.

  • A signature should stand out. That is the entire point of committing to one.
  • An everyday should recede. Being unremarkable is the job description rather than a failure.
  • Most people need the workhorse first. It sees far more wear than the statement.

What an everyday scent smells like

Everyday scents lean toward warm weather profiles, and that is no accident. Transparency and moderate weight are exactly what an unplanned day asks for, and the cold weather versions are the same idea taken a little warmer.

  • Bright and transparent. Fresh, watery blends sit at the citrus end and stay clean all day.
  • Fruity and soft. Soft fruit over a light base is the easiest everyday profile to like on first meeting.
  • Warm but restrained. A gentle amber, spice or lavender over bergamot covers the same job once it turns cold.

Where one bottle covers the desk and the day

Everyday and office scents overlap a great deal, and a bottle that passes the desk test and the errand test is the most efficient purchase you can make. The tests solve different problems, so knowing which one a bottle passes tells you how far it will stretch.

  • The desk question is about hours. One audience for a full uninterrupted workday; that constraint is set out on the office perfume page.
  • The everyday question is about places. A different audience every forty minutes, and never long enough to hold anybody's attention.
  • Buy from the overlap first. A bottle that handles the desk and the errands covers nearly every day of the week, which is where the value is.
  • Then add at the edges. Once the workhorse is settled, a second bottle for evenings is a much easier decision to get right.
