Strawberry is a difficult note to get right and most fragrances that try end up smelling like a sweet shop. This one gets away with it by hiding the strawberry behind apple and peach, so what reaches you is orchard fruit rather than confectionery. The jasmine sitting alongside is what keeps the whole middle from tipping over.

  • Fruit that reads fresh. Apple and peach lead, strawberry supports.
  • Four citrus at the top. Bitter orange, lemon, bergamot and orange together.
  • Caramel in the base. Warmth underneath rather than sugar on top.
  • Day into evening. Bright enough for one and warm enough for the other.

How the Fruit Behaves

The opening is sharp: bitter orange and lemon with bergamot behind them, all of it clean and slightly tart. Then the fruit arrives and the fragrance gets rounder without getting sticky, because apple keeps its crispness while peach adds the softness. Strawberry is the smallest voice in that group and it is deliberately placed that way.

What the Base Adds

White musk, amber, vanilla, tonka bean, caramel and benzoin is a rich landing, and on paper it reads as very sweet indeed. In practice the musk and amber hold it down and the caramel behaves as warmth rather than as sugar. By hour four this is a soft, golden scent rather than a fruit one.

When It Works

Warm months for the fruit, cool evenings for the base, and most days in between. It is one of the more versatile bottles here precisely because the two halves belong to different seasons. What it is not is subtle, so a small meeting room in July is worth thinking about.

Use Less When It Is Hot

Warmth increases how much of a fragrance leaves your skin and how fast, so the same two sprays that were right in November can be twice as loud in August. On sweet compositions the effect is strongest of all, because sugar notes amplify in heat. Drop to one spray in real summer and you will smell exactly as you intended to.
