You set how far this neckline drops, because the halter on the Plunging Halter Chiffon Gown with Side Slit fastens with a tie rather than a fixed strap. Shortening the tie lifts the neckline and raises the point where the V closes; letting it out drops both. That adjustment happens at home, in front of a mirror, before anyone sees the gown.

The Tie Sets the Neckline

A plunging neckline photographed on a model tells you almost nothing about where it will sit on you, because depth is a function of torso length as much as of cut. A fixed halter gives you no say, and a tied one gives you two or three inches of it.

If you find the depth you want, a seamstress can shorten and finish the tie so it stays there. That turns an adjustable feature into a fixed one on purpose, which is worth doing if the gown is going to be worn more than once.

Lined Chiffon Under Bright Light

This gown is fully lined, and on pale yellow, light blue and soft coral that lining is the whole reason those shades are usable. Unlined chiffon in a pale color goes translucent the moment a camera flash fires behind it.

The lining also gives the skirt something to fall against, so the draped A-line keeps a clean line instead of clinging. What it does not do is support, because it is a smooth layer rather than a structured one.

Garden Weddings and Warm Rooms

Lightweight chiffon over a thin lining is about as cool as formal wear gets to stand around in, which makes it a sensible pick for an outdoor summer ceremony or a crowded reception room.

That lightness works against it in December. A winter ballroom asks for cloth with weight and this gown has none. Sage, black and red also carry into fall far better than pale yellow does.

Six Bands and an Open Back

This gown runs across six lettered bands, and the open back means the bodice fit is read at the bust and the ribcage rather than anywhere lower.

Every figure above is in inches and is taken on the body rather than on the finished garment, so measure the fullest part of the bust, the narrowest part of the waist an inch or two above the navel, and the fullest part of the hips.

Choose on bust and waist ahead of hips, because on a draped A-line skirt the hip figure genuinely does not decide anything. If you sit between two bands, the larger one is the safer purchase. A halter that is slightly generous is corrected by the tie; one that is tight across the back has nowhere to go.

Wearing It Without Straps

What can I wear underneath an open back? Adhesive cups, or a low-back converter strap that drops the band below the opening. A standard bra band crosses exactly where the back is cut away. The bodice is lined but not boned, so treat the lining as coverage and not as support.

Is the pale yellow see-through in photographs? No. The full lining sits behind every color including the palest ones, which is the specific problem it was put there to solve.

Does a floor-length hem need a heel? It is cut for one. Worn flat the hem will pool and catch underfoot on stairs. Decide the shoe before the hem gets altered, because shortening a chiffon skirt means re-hemming several layers and it is not worth doing twice.

Can the side slit be closed up? Yes, and it is a simple seam. Sewing the slit shut higher costs very little and does not disturb the drape, which makes this gown workable under a strict dress code even though it is not cut for one.
