Opacity Is Arithmetic

How much a chiffon gown shows is a function of layer count, not of quality. One layer over a lining is standard. Two or three deepen the color and soften the edge of the lining beneath, which is why a three-layer chiffon in the same dye looks richer than a single layer of the same cloth.

Where the layers stop is the thing to check. An outer layer that ends higher than the lining leaves a visible horizontal edge across the skirt. One that ends lower means the last few inches at the floor are sheer, which is invisible in a fitting room and obvious in photographs taken from across a room.

The Sleeves Are Not What They Look Like

• Chiffon sleeves give the appearance of coverage, not the effect. A cape, cap or long sleeve in chiffon reads as covered in a photograph and at a ceremony while leaving the arm essentially bare.
• They solve the venue, not the temperature. A cold ballroom is unaffected by a sheer sleeve, so plan the wrap separately if the room will be cold.
• An illusion yoke works the same way. It reads as a high neckline from a distance and as skin up close, which is usually the intended effect.

What Chiffon Does That Heavier Cloth Cannot

Chiffon has no memory and almost no weight, so any shape it holds has been built into the seam rather than into the fabric. That is what pleating and draping are for. A pleated chiffon skirt keeps its folds because they are stitched at the waist, not because the cloth wants to stay folded, which is why the pleats survive a whole evening and a crease from the garment bag does not. On an A-line skirt, the same absence of weight is what lets the skirt move without swinging.

Handling It

• It snags on dry skin and jewelry. Fine yarn in an open weave catches on things that would not mark a heavier cloth.
• A pull cannot be pushed back out. It can only be worked through to the inside, so do that rather than trimming it.
• It will not hold an opening in place. On a gown with a leg slit, chiffon lets the edge drift instead of hanging where it was cut, which is worth planning for outdoors.

The Lining Decides The Color

Layered chiffon takes its final color from what sits behind it as much as from its own dye. A blush gown is very often white lining under pink chiffon, which is why it photographs lighter than it looked in your hand, and why the same gown looks warmer under tungsten light at a reception than it did under the daylight of a fitting room.

Ask what the lining is before assuming a color will hold. Where the outer layer is dark and the lining is nude, the effect at the hem and at a leg slit is closer to sheer than the swatch suggests, and that is a design choice rather than an oversight.
