Product Type: Gloves

Long gloves with a little sparkle, but cut in soft cashmere instead of satin, so they belong with a winter coat rather than an evening gown. They measure 13 inches, about 33 cm, from fingertip to cuff, and a sunburst of tiny rhinestones fans out from the wrist over each glove. Black, light gray or classic navy. Portolano lists the yarn as 100% cashmere.

  • 13 inches long. They reach well up the forearm, ending partway to the elbow rather than above it like an evening glove.
  • Rhinestone sunburst. Rays of small stones spread across each glove from the wrist; the palm side stays plain and soft.
  • Three colors. Black, light gray and a deep classic navy, each with clear stones.
  • One size. It comes in one size, which Portolano says fits most hands.

Long Gloves with Shorter Sleeves

Long gloves solve the gap that three-quarter and bracelet-length coat sleeves leave behind. A wrist-length glove stops where the sleeve stops, and the forearm in between gets the wind; at 13 inches this pair runs up under the sleeve, so the coat and the glove meet instead of leaving bare skin. They also work with a cape or a poncho, where there is no sleeve at all.

Push them down a little and the extra length gathers in soft folds at the wrist, which is the other way to wear them.

Rhinestone Gloves for Daytime

Most rhinestone gloves are mesh or satin for a party. These keep the sparkle small and orderly, lines of stones radiating like light, on a warm everyday knit, so they look right with a wool coat at noon. On black and navy the stones read as a clear starburst; on light gray they are softer and more tonal.

The stones sit on the back of the glove only, so your grip on a bag strap or a railing stays pure knit.

Caring for Embellished Cashmere

Portolano's care instruction is dry clean only. Point out the stones when you hand them in. At home, store the pair flat with the rhinestone side up, not folded across the rays, and keep them away from fluffy scarves that can catch on a stone edge.

Long Cashmere Gloves in Practice

How long should long gloves be? It depends on the sleeve. Measure from your middle fingertip to where your coat sleeve ends; if that is well over 10 inches, a wrist glove leaves a gap and a 13 inch pair like this one closes it.

Will the rhinestones catch on my coat? On a smooth wool or a quilted coat they slide right past. Loose, hairy knits such as mohair are the only fabric to watch.

What color goes with the most coats? Navy goes with more than people expect, from camel to gray to black. Black is the classic, and light gray is the one for a pale or cream coat.

Do they work on a phone screen? No, the fingertips are plain cashmere, so slip a finger out to unlock.
