Product Type: Gloves

Fingerless gloves earn their keep indoors as much as out: a cold office, a drafty kitchen, the early train, a phone that needs your thumb. These are knit in cashmere, 11 inches long from the open finger ends to the top of a deep ribbed cuff, in a soft light gray that sits with nearly every coat. Portolano lists the yarn as 100% cashmere.

  • Long ribbed cuff. The rib runs well past the wrist bone, so the gap between coat sleeve and hand stays covered.
  • Free fingertips. Each finger and the thumb end in a short open tube, so typing, writing and texting never mean taking a glove off.
  • Light gray. A cool, quiet neutral that works with charcoal, camel, navy and black.
  • One size. It comes in one size, which Portolano says fits most hands.

Fingerless Gloves for Texting and Typing

Fingerless gloves are the answer when your hands are cold but your fingers have work to do. The palm and the back of the hand stay wrapped in knit, while the fingertips stay bare for a keyboard, a touchscreen, a pen or a coin purse. So the smart move with fingerless texting gloves is to keep a pair at your desk as well as in your coat.

The finger tubes stop short, so every fingertip has full feel and grip, and the knit still covers the base of each finger where the cold creeps in first.

Why the Wrist Matters for Warmth

Blood on its way to your hands runs close to the skin at the inside of the wrist, so a cold wrist cools everything below it. A long cuff keeps that stretch insulated, which is why an 11 inch fingerless glove feels warmer than its open fingers suggest. The rib also grips without a tight band, so it stays up under a sweater sleeve instead of sliding toward the knuckles.

Light Gray Cashmere Care

Portolano's care instruction is dry clean only. Between cleanings, lay the gloves flat to air out rather than hanging them by the cuff, which stretches the rib. Cashmere pills where it rubs, usually across the palm and between the fingers; a cashmere comb lifts the little balls off in a few strokes. Store them folded with cedar in a drawer, because moths like a natural fiber that has been worn.

Fingerless Gloves Through the Season

Are fingerless gloves warm enough outside? On a cool fall day or a quick errand, yes. For a long walk in real cold, slide a mitten over them and pull it off when you need your fingers.

Will they work with a smartphone? Every time, because your fingertips touch the screen directly. No special pads are needed.

Can I wear rings underneath? A slim band fits under the knit without trouble. A tall stone can pull a loop of yarn, so put that ring on after the glove.
