Most figures at this size get one color and a wash. An emperor penguin needs three, because the black back, the white front and the yellow flash at the throat are all doing identification work, and dropping any one of them turns the bird into a generic penguin. All three are applied to a body about an inch tall.
- Three colors applied. Black, white and the yellow throat, each its own pass.
- Adults, not chicks. Sleek plumage rather than the gray down of a juvenile.
- Tallest of the seabirds. The emperor is the largest living penguin species.
- 192 birds included. A single mold, repeated across the bag.
Three Passes at One Inch
Each additional color on a miniature is another masking step and another chance to bleed over an edge. The yellow throat is the one to inspect, because it is the smallest area and the first place a rushed job shows.
Why Emperors Huddle
Emperor penguins breed through an Antarctic winter and survive it by packing into huddles that rotate, so birds on the cold outside edge work their way to the middle over time. It is one of the few genuinely cooperative behaviors in the bird world, and a bag of 192 is the simplest way to lay that behavior out for a class.
Emperor Penguin Questions
Which penguin is this? The emperor, the largest living species, shown as an adult rather than a chick.
How many paint colors? Three, with the yellow throat flash applied last and smallest.
Do these match the chick bag? They are the same scale and made to stand together as adults and young.
