The Adeline is an oversized sweater in wide black and camel stripes, with a collar and a quarter zip at the neck. Zip it to the chin on a cold morning, pull it open into a soft V once the room warms up: one sweater, two temperatures.

A Quarter Zip Sweater Made Softer

A quarter zip sweater usually reads sporty and boxy. Here the stripes and the dropped, roomy cut soften it. Zipped up, the collar frames the face like a turtleneck; unzipped, it opens into small lapels that show off a necklace or the collar of a shirt underneath. Closing the collar also seals the gap at the throat where body heat escapes, so it does the job of a scarf on a windy walk.

Wool makes up a small share of the blend, so the warmth here comes mainly from the knit itself and that closable collar rather than from the fiber.

Breaking Up Wide Stripes

Wide horizontal stripes add width, and an oversized cut adds more. Open the zip and the V it makes draws a vertical line down the center, the simplest way to keep the stripes from boxing you in. Slim dark jeans below and a crossbody bag worn across the body, as in the photos, add two more lines that run against the stripes. Each letter size covers two women's numeric sizes: S is 4 and 6, M is 8 and 10, L is 12 and 14, and XL is 16 and 18.

Shoes and Bags in Camel

Brown leather picks up the camel and makes the sweater look warmer; black boots pick up the black and make it look sharper. White sneakers keep it weekend-casual. For bags, cognac is the natural match, and a black bag with gold hardware turns the same outfit toward dinner.

Camel Stripes for Cold Mornings

Should the zipper be closed in the wash? Yes. Open zipper teeth catch the knit and pull loops, so close it, turn the sweater inside out and wash it cool on a gentle cycle before drying it flat.

Is a quarter zip warmer than a crewneck? With the collar zipped, noticeably. A crewneck leaves the throat open, while the stand-up collar covers it; open, the two are about even.

Does the collar lie flat when unzipped? It folds back into soft lapels rather than pressed ones, which suits the relaxed body. A quick pass with a steamer sets the fold if you want it crisper for the day.
